Daffodils of Spring
Author
Rachel Borello
Introduction
I was inspired to make this by the spring flowers coming up in my yard. Daffodils have a really neat shape that translates well into crochet. You could sew a pin onto the back of one to make a brooch, sew one onto a tote to make a nice spring bag, or twist a green pipecleaner through the back to make a stem and stick a bunch into a vase.
Materials List
Size F US/4.0mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn in white (petals) and yellow (cup)
Finished Size
Flower is about 5" wide
Gauge
Gauge is not important in this project, just be sure that the fabric is tight enough so you do not have large holes in your petals.
Notes
I crocheted these in yellow and white, but daffodils come in a wide variety of colors, so use your imagination!
The Pattern
center (make 1):
Ch 12, join to beginning to make a circle.
Sc in each of 12 chs. Do not join rounds, and work in a spiral instead, single crocheting in each stitch around until center piece is a tube about an inch long.

(sc, hdc, dc) in each stitch around for one round to make the ruffled edge. Tie off yarn and weave in ends.

petals (make 6):
Ch 4
Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across - 3 st. ch 1 and turn.
Sc 2 in first stitch. sc in next stitch. sc 2 in last stitch. There should be 5 stitches. ch 1 and turn.
Sc 2. sc in next 3 stitches. sc 2 in last stitch. There are 7 stitches in this row. ch 1 and turn.
Work next 4 rows even.
Sc in second stitch from hook. Sc next two stitches together. Sc in next stitch. Sc next two stitches together. Sc in last stitch. Ch1 and turn.
Sc in second stitch from hook. Sc next two stitches together. Sc next two stitches together. Ch 1 and turn.
Sc in second stitch from hook. Sc next two stitches together. Ch 1 and turn.
Sc two remaining stitche together. Tie off yarn. You should have a petal-shaped piece as shown below.

The edges of your petal will be rough, so join the yarn at bottom of petal. Working along the edge of the petal, pick up and sc 11 stitches. In the space at the top of the petal, sc 3 times. Pick up and sc 11 stitches down the other side of the petal. Tie off yarn and weave in ends. The edges of your petal should now be even and finished-looking.

Sew petals together to create the back of the flower.

Sew center onto the flower, and weave in all ends.

Thrifty Digicam Cozy

Introduction
This is a pattern I came up with, to protect my new toy... A Casio EXILIM digital Camera. I received it in the mail and didn't have a cover to protect it. I made my own.
The cozy is made of left over yarns in my stash.
It is a good gift idea and works up in less than half an hour.
Materials List
Cascade 220 (Light Teal)
LionBrand Homespun (Black)
Finished Size
Approximate Length 4"
Approximate Width 3"
Gauge
3 sc and 3 rows = 1" (approximately) in heavier yarn.
Notes
Crochet Hook Size: US K / 6.5 mm (For Homespun)
US D / 3.25 mm (For Cascade 220)
Abbreviations:
Single Chain (sc/ scs) (I directed a video to demonstrate the stitch which is available from you tube - left handed and right handed)
Half Double Crochet (hdc) (Video available here on you tube.)
Chain (ch)
Inches ( " )
The Pattern
I worked the cozy in two yarn weights Heavier (Color A - Homespun) and Lighter (Color B - Cascade)
(Note: The pattern can be adopted to fit any camera/ cellphone/ Mp3 music player etc simply by checking the dimensions of the object it is being made for and then increasing the base chain numbers accordingly.)
* With Color A and K hook ch 11, turn. (11th chain will count for turning.)
* SC in the second chain from hook, * sc across to the end (total 10 scs). Ch 1 turn
* Repeat from * till the piece is exactly double the width of the camera. (My camera is 3.5", so my rectangular piece measured 7"). Bind off A.
* Join the Color B in the last sc of the previous row. Fold the rectangular piece in half and start sc through both layers from this corner down to the sides (Both layers of the piece will be joined on the sides using this edge.) then the bottom and then the corner of the other side. We now have a nice edge around 3 sides of piece. Use 1ch or 2scs to turn corners.
* Now we will work on the open edges in the round. ch 1, 2 scs with B in each sc of A (Total 40 scs around.) Join in the first ch1 using slip stitch.
* * ch 2, hdc in each sc around. Join with slip st to the first ch2. (total 40scs around.)
* Repeat from * for 3 more rows.
* ch2, 3hdc in the next 3scs, 1ch and skip next sc, *4hdc in the next 4 scs, 1ch and skip next sc. Repeat from * to the end. Join with slip stitch to the first chain 2. Bind off. The holes created in the last row will be used for the closure string.
To make the closure string
* Take Color B, 4 times the actual length that will be required for the pouch edge leaving two ends of atleast 2-4" each.
* Fold the length of B in half and secure one end. (I put the folded end in one of my toes) and twist it between your palms.
* Once the half length is twisted hold both ends together (thus resulting in another half fold of the already half length) and free the other end. The yarn will self twist to form a nice cord.
* Now thread this cord through the holes created in the last row of the cozy alternating drawing direction. (From outside to inside once and visa versa till the end.)
* Join the loose ends together with a knot to form a loop.

Introduction
My husband has been asking me to make him a bee for awhile now! Having finally almost finished Babette Blanket (and being out of the wool I need to complete its edging), I thought I’d go for the bee at long last!

Finished Size
My finished Bee is just under 2 inches long.

Gauge is unimportant for this project.
Notes
It’s a very quick and easy pattern worked in rounds, make sure you mark your final st or the round so you know where ‘the beginning’ is.
The Pattern
BODY:
Ch 2
Row 1: 6 sc in 1st ch, (mark 6th st)
Row 2: 2 sc in next 6 st (12sc, mark 12th st)

Row 10: Change to yellow and sc around (18sc).
Row 11: *1 sc in 1st stitch, 1 dec. Repeat from * for entire round (12 sc, mark 12th st)
Row 12: dec next 12 st (6 sc).
Then finish off and leave a little bit of yarn to weave around the opening of your bee.
Stuff the little dude with whatever fuzzy/fluffy stuff you have to hand (I save the little ends from other projects and use those)
Weave the yarn through the last 6 st and pull tightly to close. Weave in all ends.
WINGS (make 2):
ch 4
Round 1: beginning in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 st, ch 1, turn
Round 2: 1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in 3rd st, then 2sc in opposite side of the st you just worked 2 sc into. (you’re working in a little ‘U’ shape), 2 sc, finish off.
Then sew all the bits toghether! His eyes are just made from wool-knots in this picture, but use anything you like!

Amigurumi Squid
Author
Katherine Gleason
Introduction
Cephalopods are my favorite kind of animal; they're the most intelligent invertebrates, and their eyes are comparable to human eyes. Plus, their blood is blue-green! For the more zoologically inclined, they're actually members of the mollusk phylum, with clams and snails. I thought a cuttlefish might be a bit ambitious, but a squid seemed relatively easy, and I couldn't find any patterns of them online. To that end, I made my own! His name's Calvin, and he's the sweetest squid a girl could ask for!
The pattern includes some texture on the arms, but I'm not sure how it would look in solid-colored yarn - the multicolored yarn makes it a little hard to see.
Materials List
- Size F/3.75 mm hook
- Worsted weight yarn (any color!)
- 2 buttons, plus needle & thread (or yarn, depending on size of buttons)
- Polyfil stuffing
- yarn needle
Finished Size
About 14" (36 cm) from head to tip of tentacles, about 3 1/2" (9 cm) across the fins, body is about 2 1/2" (6 cm) in diameter, arms & tentacles are about 1/2" (1 cm) in diameter; Size may vary if different yarn/hook size used and number of repeated rounds per part
Gauge
stitches should be tight - other yarn weights/hook sizes could be easily substituted, as long as stitches are tight enough to prevent stuffing from showing/falling out!
Notes
All rounds worked without joining unless otherwise noted - use a stitch marker to keep track of rounds
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
blo = back loop only
fpsc = "front post" single crochet - insert hook from front around post of sc below, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook
sc dec = sc decrease - same as sc 2 tog - insert hook in next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, insert hook in 2nd stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 3 loops on hook
dc = double crochet
st = stitch/stitches
The Pattern

American Beauty Afghan By Kathy Brown
Author
Introduction
You can make this an afghan, or
bedspread.
Gauge is not really a problem with this pattern.
You just need even numbers when making your chain. The hook will decide the
size. I used an L hook. My finished size was 85”L x 85”W as it was my intention
to make a very large blanket to cover our bed in either the house or trailer.
Materials List
Yarns used: Red Heart; 8

The Pattern
Chain 256 with white.
Single crochet in 2nd
chain from hook and each stitch thereafter to the end. Chain 1 and turn.
YO Pull up a loop in the first
stitch, YO pull up a loop in the next stitch. 3 loops on hook.
YO and pull through 2 loops, then
YO and pull through 2 loops. Stitch complete. Chain 3 turn.
YO pull stitch up in the same
stitch you just finished, YO and pull loop up in next stitch.
3 loops on hook. YO and pull
through 2 loops, YO and pull through 2 loops. Continue in this manor to the end
of the row where you will do 1 double crochet in the last stitch. I changed
colors at the beginning of every 13th row. On this blanket, there
are 8 sections of white and four sections of each color.
Repeat row 2 until you reach the desired length.
Finish off. Weave in all ends.

Debbie G.
Introduction
This is for a large dog. Pooky is an 13-year-old Black Lab. I searched for a sweater/coat pattern for a large dog and found that I had to make my own pattern.
Materials List
Worsted weight yarn, approximately: 2 x 50 gm balls of 2 contrasting colors. Worsted weights are all appropriate. Pick whichever is best for your area's winter weather. Buy an extra skein or two just in case. I used a 1 lb ball of Dusty rose I had and bought the same in Cranberry.
Hook size 6mm
3/4" buttons-3
Yarn needle
Finished Size
To fit a large dog.
Gauge
however tight or loose you crochet.
Notes
Note: Work with both colors held together and it's all done in double chain stitches to make a warm thick coat.
The Pattern
Neck ribbing: Make 2 inches wide, work in back loops only and the length of your dog's neck (Pooky's is 23)
Back: (from base of neck to tail is 29 inches, is 15 inches wide, add the tummy band of 22 inches) this is all worked in dc.
Underneath Section: ch 23.
Work 22 sc across first row, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in first sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk 1 p 1 sc, 1 sc in last st, ch 1 , turn.

Neckband:
Rnd 1: With right side facing and MC, join yarn with slip st at seam; ch 1, sc evenly around, join with slip st to first sc.

Winter hood for a coat or jacket
Author
Debbie G.
Introduction
I made this hood to attach to my jacket. It didn't have one and in cold Canadian winters, I REALLY needed one!!!
Materials List
Materials:
1-2 balls of worsted weight yarn in your choice of colours. (I used Bernat Super Value yarn in Cream and a green to match my jacket.)
Size G (6 US) or size to obtain gauge
5 x ½ inch buttons
Finished Size
My hood is 20 inches
Gauge
8 sts and 6 rows = 2 in.
Notes
Measure inside of collar on coat/jacket. This will guide you as to how many stitches needed for base row. My hood is 20 inches, so these instructions are for that measurement. More pictures are at...http://s54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/Emeraldthistle_photos/Emeraldthistle_Crochet_stuff_2008/?start=20
The Pattern
Starting at base of hood, with main colour, ch 77
Row 1: (right side) sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, * 1 sc in next sc, 1 dc in the next dc* repeat from * to end. (76 sts) Turn
Rows 2-6: Dec 1 st at ea end of next 5 rows (66sts) remain at end of last row.
Rows 7 on: Work this pattern evenly on 66 sts until you have a piece measuring 13 inches (32.5 cm).
Finishing:
sc all round edge of piece. Fold top row of hood in half. Starting at fold, sew top seam of hood together. Fasten off.
Attach contrast colour, and sc along front edge of hood, ch 1 at end, turn, sc back to beginning, ch 1 and turn. *Dc in next ch and cont to end. .* repeat from * for 4 rows, dec over 2 sc at each end. Fasten off.
Button rows:
Turn piece over and dc in ea of sc of row 1. (This will give you more “holes” to ensure you can sew your buttons evenly spaced or if you goof sewing them on like I did!) ch 1 and turn. * 1 sc in next sc, 1 dc in the next dc* repeat from * to end. Turn, inc at ea end of work for 5 rows. Sc all round edge. Fasten off. Sew buttons to INSIDE of collar on jacket evenly spaced as best as you can. Attach hood with the buttons.
There you have it! I hope this makes sense. I made this hood in 2006 so I may have forgotten to add something. Please let me know if you find any errors.
