Recycle your old-non-useful CD's into beautiful coasters

Recycle, don´t throw away!

Introduction

http://www.flickr.com/photos/honeyvarita/3523348008/
My mug and my diffussor were unhappy placed on an old CD, but the CD felt it was still useful, so I decided to add some thread, and imagination, for making nice coasters

Materials List

-Old CD's
-Thread, scraps, about 1-2 oz
-2 crochets 2mm (N° 4 steel crochets), one for work the sc , the other to bring the yarn up

Finished Size

12-14 cm diam (4.8-5" diam)

Gauge

Not important

Notes

You can see the CD, but that is nice too.

The Pattern

Add thread to an old CD, with one crochet, do sc at the outside border, the other one is for bringing the thread for work.
Follow the line of the diam., so no thread will be on top of more thread.
I made shells
1 row : 1 sc,1hdc, 2dc, 1tc, 2dc, 1hdc, 1 sc all in a previous sc, skip 2 sc, shell, all around the border
2 row, ch 5, sc on top of treble, ch 4, ss on first ch (picot made), ch 5, sc between shells.
Iron with steam or a wet towel.

I also made it with simple flowers, or mimic a spider web with a little spider, they look very nice.

Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Teatime in Spring

Placemat –

Ch 40
Row 1 – DC in 3rd chain from hook and each chain across (38 DC) Ch 4 (counts as DC & ch 1 throughout) Turn
Row 2- DC in 2nd DC, ch 1, *skip DC, DC in next DC, ch 1*, repeat from * to *, DC in last DC. Ch 3, turn
Row 3- DC in first ch 1 sp, *ch 1, sk DC, DC in next ch 1 sp*. Repeat * to * across to last sp & DC. DC in last ch sp and top of ch 3 (this was the ch 4 from row 1) Chain 4 turn.

Repeat row 2 & 3 for pattern ending with row 2 for as wide as you want your placemat.

Last row, DC in each DC & ch space across.

Finish off. Weave in ends

Centerpiece-

Centerpiece is made the same as the placemat. I made the following changes to mine. I made it a few rows wider than the placemats. At the end of the last row, I did a border of DC all the way around (3 DC in corners) and then another row of *sc, sk dc, 3dc in next dc, sk dc, sc* around with 3 Dc in each corner.

Coaster-

Start with magic circle.

Row 1-Ch 4, (counts as DC +ch 1) DC, ch 1 in circle 13 times. End with ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 4. (14 DC, 14 sp) Ch 4 TURN
Row 2- *DC in next DC, Ch 1, DC in ch 1 sp,* Repeat around join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4– 28 DC Ch 3 TURN
Row 3 – DC in each dc & ch sp around. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (56 DC)

Finish off weave in ends.

Napkin rings-

Ch 18
Row 1- DC in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across. Ch 4 Turn

Row 2- DC in 2nd DC *ch 1, sk DC, DC in next DC* across to end. Ch 3 Turn

Row 3. DC in 2nd DC and each DC & ch sp across. At end of row, bring the opposite end over and join the 2 ends with slip stitch over all 3 rows to form a ring. (or use the stitch of your choice)

Simple tie

Introduction

My dad asked me to crochet a tie for him as a Christmas gift. I had no idea how to make a tie (that he actually would want to wear!)but I decided to give it a try. I've since then made several ties for my dad and he gets compliments for them wherever he goes. This is a pattern that is very simple and can be developed in a great many ways!

Materials List

2 skeins of yarn, I've used Järbo 8/4, Marks & Kattens "Bianca" and Ideas Daily 8/4. The skeins are 50 grams each and holds 120-150 meters. (I do believe you want to use cotton for this, at least nothing with wool since it tends to get rather warm!)

hook 1,75-2,5 depending on the yarn (you want to use a small hook so the stitches can get real tight!)

Needle for weaving in ends

Finished Size

I've made the ties 140 cm in total, 70 cm/section. I believe that is approximately 54 inches, 27 inches/section.

Gauge

It does not really matter

Notes

The pattern uses american stitches. sc-single crochet, dc-double crochet, sl-slip stitch, ch-chain, st-stitch.

The pattern get its texture from working one dc, one sc in every other stitch.

The Pattern

With hook of your preference, chain 16.

Sc in 3rd ch from hook. One dc in next st, then work sc and dc alternately. End row with sc. (14 st in total, the first 3-ch counts as one. So: 7dc and 7sc in every row)

Ch 3. Sc in next ant continue in pattern.

When tie is 70cm/27 inches the pattern changes to only dc.

In the first row, ch 3 (first dc), then dc2tog, continue dc until the last 3 st. Dc2tog again and finish the row with 1 dc. (12 dc)

Repeat that row again. (10dc).

Repeat again if you want it narrower, but I find 10 st to be a perfect width.

Work dc-rows until tie is 140 cm /54 inches in total (70cm / 27inches for this section).

Work one or two rows of sc (for stability).

Fasten off and weave in the loose ends.

Either make a chain for holding the front and back of the tie together, or use a ribbon or something. (You know on the back of a tie how there's some sort of label where you can squeeze the thin piece of a tie? That's what I'm talking about here...)

Spray with water and block to make it straight.

Ruffled Spring Cowl

1 skein Jaegar Agua, shade 312, Mystery Color I call Plum - Color B
OR any DK weight, mercerized cotton
Crochet hook size "I"
2 buttons (or a Dritz Fabric Button Kit + coordinating fabric)
Sewing needle and thread
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Finished Size

7 ½" tall at tallest point (counting ruffles) x 18" long (will stretch slightly - but is designed to fit snugly.)

Gauge

4 dc = 1"

Row 3: work sc in second dc, work sc in chain 3 space, chain 3, work 3 dc into chain 3 space, * 4 dc in next chain 3 space - repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Fourth Ruffle
Skip next dc row and work fourth ruffle into next dc row - or 7th row of dc from the top. Attach yarn around post of 3rd dc of this row.

Repeat instructions for Third Ruffle, keeping in mind you will have 12 chain 4 spaces instead of 13.

Finishing
Weave in ends. Fold the piece so that the buttonhole edge lines up with the opposite edge and using the buttonholes as a guide, place your buttons. (I didn't have any buttons in my stash that matched good enough - so I made mine using the Dritz Fabric Button Kit and some coordinating fabric I found in my stash.)

Steam or Wet Block your cowl, if desired.
