When You Screw Up Hat Measurements...

So there I was, attempting to make a hat for my husband, and I ended up WAY over-guessing the size of his head. Instead of ripping out the stitches like a normal, sane person, I continued with it in the hope that it would miraculously become what I had originally intended. It didn't. :(

As I looked at it with a frown of the eyebrows, I noticed it had begun looking very "frenchie" in style, and I realized that if I decreased the stitches a bit as I continued, I would be making myself a very French Beret. Add a fuzzy rim or ribbon around the rim and YAY!!! I had myself a cute French beret to wear out in public!

So my tip is this: When you screw up measurements on a hat, don't count it out. You might just end up making something terribly creative, one-of-a-kind and beautiful.

I have done this before- my kids stopped buying my line that if it's nice & loose, they won't get "hat head"!
Another way to fix it is to use a piece of ribbon or yarn run up the back of the hat from top to bottom- tie it to the inside top- and pull it to scrunch it up.

Ooooh. I love the vertical ribbon idea. I suppose you could also run it on the outside of the hat and scrunch it from the bottom for a very Bohemian/flowerchild look!

Or you could finish it and give it to someone with a big head. :)

Very cute hat! Has anyone ever mentioned that you look quite a bit like Barbra Streisand?

No they haven't! But I'm going to take that as a compliment!

Sometimes when my hat turns out too large at the bottom, I run some elasticized thread through (clear, like the kind used in jewelry making).
