Unique Crochet Materials

I have to admit, some of my favorite crochet projects are those that aren't even made from yarn. I have fallen in love with wire crochet jewelry, jute mats and bags, and ribbon accessories. In fact, if it's string-like, I've probably tried to crochet it.

I have some more ideas in my article here: http://www.handmadenews.org/article/index.php?id=3459

But if you have any additional suggestions, please leave a comment so I can try it out!

mad for crochet!
I came across a woman on Ravelry who was knitting with seaweed! There is some cool tape like seaweed called eelgrass around where I live, so I think I may have to try it.

That's awesome! And here I thought I had heard of all the weird materials already--that's a new one on me! Thanks for sharing! Think I'll have to try it too. :D

What a great picture and a great idea! I had never thought of using wire or anything else to crochet with. Thanks for the ideas and the photos of what can be done. casino

store bags, vcr tape from old tapes, old clothes cut in strips, and don't forget to unravel those old funky sweaters for the yarn and make something you want.

Ooh--I like the idea of using VHS tape. That would make for an interesting shopping bag. :D

I started making the bracelets featured in Crochet Magazine. They are made with nylon beading thread that crochets easily. 4 strands crocheted pulling the beads up one at a time and crocheting inbetween. The only problem I have had is the size. They are either way big or to small. I will have to post a picture when I get the size correct. Great fun though. Of course here I go with more projects :)
