Stash Yarn Swatches

Stash Yarn Swatches

I am always trying to use up yarn from my stash, and often forget exactly what colors I have. This results in the purchase of duplicate yarn, thus causing my stash to multiply almost as fast as a great sale at Michael's.

I came up with an easy way to keep track, and also help plan out future projects.

I pulled out my embroidery floss cards (the white cardboard spool shapes that you wind the hank onto for storage) and wound a length of yarn onto it, labeling it with the brand and color name. I recommend glueing each end to the card to secure it. They can be kept on a large metal split ring, often used for keeping the little baggies of floss together.

Now, not only do I know what colors I already have, but when I find a pattern I like, I can begin choosing the colors for it.
I have found it especially helpful when trying to coordinate colors with other items in a room such as furniture, throw pillows, drapes, etc...or when asking my neice which shade of pink her dolly would like for her blanket.

O so pretty!

I used to carry little cut off pieces in my sketchbook- just taped to the top of the back page, hanging down, like. So there's a portable option too. Just not as pretty.

Your way is smarter especially for color changing yarns.

But, now that I have a BAN on buying yarn until I *finish* some projects I started.. I'm carrying no such thing around with me.

Oh, yeah. I've got the "no new yarn, no new projects" ban. I guess it's a good thing my hubby didn't see the dozen skeins I smuggled home from the store. They were on clearance for next to nothing...I couldn't help myself!

I explained to my hubby that this would help me use up what I already had, so that I didn't buy more. I don't know how much he believed me though...

ROFL, i just read that to my boyfriend. he laughed... i think i've used that one before.

he says "that's the most nonsensical thing i ever heard"...

and it MADE SENSE to me!

(edit) right after i posted this.. he says to me: "i'm OK with your yarn addiction".. i said oh yeah? and he said "well, it's not crack."

That's a really great idea. I'll try it on the weekend.

I also have the same problem with having too many yarns (according to my hubby). But I can't have too many yarns! They are just irresistible.

I cleaned my closet last night, and lo! I sure have a lot of yarns. teehee. It's like discovering new friends. :)

Now I'm planning new projects with my old yarns instead of buying new ones which I had planned to do.

I love Crochet!

In a combination of this tip and the tip about tags for crocheted items...
I took the label from the yarn (my collection is all relatively new) and folded it up, then wrapped a little bit of the yarn around it. Now I have the yarn color and exactly what yarn it is in the same place! :D

This is a great idea and especially useful for me because I am out of state at school and the majority of my yarn is unfortunatly at my permanent residence. Thank you so much for your wonderful idea!
