Starch with sugar and water
Starching without any petrochemicals, and believe me it will be very stiff and so easy to do:
1 part water
2 part sugar (volume, I use a cup)
Heat the mix but be aware, just wait the sugar to dissolve, about 1 minute after boiling, never let it become brown.
Use as a regular stiffener, block, let it dry.

This is a great tip for using to block items that are crocheted in the mercerized cotton thread that I have been making a lot of lately!!! I got this online already but I had to search for it and request it actually so this is great that you listed it here for all to see because a lot of people are using the finer products that require blocking and stiffening too to be their absolute best finish! Thanks for this tip! :-)

Wouldn't this attract bugs in the linen cupboard if used on doilies, lace or snowflake type ornaments that are only used once a year? It sounds like a wonderful, very cheap idea, though, which I might try myself.

Try a big tablespoon corn starch with a cup a water. Less likely to attract bugs, rot, or mold.
