Granny Squares and using up that leftover yarn

I read somewhere on this site that someone was tired of using granny squares for those orphan balls of yarn. Hats are a great way to use up yarn besides granny squares. In the 70's we used granny squares for vests, lampshades, placemats, belts, ties, patches on jeans--yes, we embroidered and patched up our own jeans! We used granny squares to make blankets, too. You could use the leftovers for socks, or slippers too.

Ahhh the 70's, I remember my mom sewing patches on our jeans.

That's right! I saw that in a book once. You make a huge granny square and then fold in the corners and sew together to make a bootie. A friend of mine made lots of cash doing that with yard sale yarn.
