Easy To Do Ribbing In Crochet

Start off with a chain and sc in the second ch from your hook.
At the end of the row, ch 1, and turn. Next (and subsequent rows) sc in the back loop of each stitch. The very last sc of the row is done through both loops. Ch 1, and Turn. That is all there is to it.

I do that and mines never looks like that. What could i possibly be doing wrong?

I'm not sure without having a look at it. But, I have been doing ribbing the way I explained it and so far it has worked every time.

By the way, I love that elephant you got pacing back and forth. I see he's inside the box. Perhaps that is why he's pacing. He wants to go outside of the box.

hmmm...Looking at the top of the single crochet...there are two loops. One in the front, that is closest to you. The one in the back is the furthest from you.

Think about when you make a chain and then go to single crochet into the chain. The chain has two loops. You are actually crocheting into the back loop of the chain. Look closely next time you do that. You should be able to 'see' what I mean that way.

Sorry i took so long. I did see it. Thank for elaborating for me. I tried what you said on a pair of fingerless I made up last night and it did look like ribbing. I think it had to do with the yarn being so think. you couldnt tell. LOL thank you again.

So this makes a horizontal mock rib? Can this be worked in the round to simulate a cuff or turtleneck?
Thanks.

Yes, it sure can be. All you do is ch at the end of the last row and turn your work, then proceed to crochet into the side of the ribbing. This puts the ribbing at the bottom of your sweater or sleeve and the rest of your work goes up from there.

You can join the last row of ribbing to the starting chain row if you wish to work in the round. After joining proceed as above.
