For Beginner Crocheters

I have taught many people to crochet over the years, and many get frustrated because they cannot crochet the things they see me crocheting. They forget that I have been crocheting since I was 11 years old and that with time comes skill.
I teach newbies to do the foundation chain and the double crochet stitch. They are the most common stitches, at least that I have found.
Once you have the chain and double crochet down, you can crochet a granny square which can be crocheted into many things.
Take your time and don't get frustrated if you cannot crochet like the people you have known to crochet for a while. Get comfortable with one stitch at a time and use it until you master it and your crocheting experience will be a happier and more fruitful one!

Good advice for life, too. Enjoy working with the skills you have now.

So is teaching them foundation chain and double crochet better than foundation chain and single crochet? I always start with single crochet...

Thanks, that helps. I'm a frustrated beginner, wanting to make baby blankets, hats, etc etc etc... I'll have to keep your advice in mind!

I'm a beginner and this is very good advice. I learned the foundation chain and single crochet first. Then learned the double crochet. Thats about all I know so far. I have 2 single stitch scarves I am gonna finish up, then start a double stitch scarf. After that I want to learn working in rounds so I can make simple hats. :-)

Well, seeing that the double crochet and chain stitches are the most popular, it only makes sense to learn them. I figure if you can master the double crochet, then the other stitches such as single crochet, etc., will be easier. when you get comfortable, you can try the more advanced stitches like cluster stitch ect. Glad you found the idea helpful.

Happy crocheting,
