granite stitch decreases- why is it uneven?

I've been frogging and frogging and I can't figure out why I can't get this right!

The pattern calls for a granite or seed stitch- sc, chain 1, sc, with each sc in the chain space of the previous row.

I'm supposed to decrease at the beginning and end of every other row. (It's a sleeve cap, if that helps.)

What I keep ending up with is a very gentle angle on the right hand side (the beginning-of-row decrease) and a much sharper angle on the left hand side (the end-of-row decrease).

I've looked at the granite stitch decrease page on this site but am still confused.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

(and if I can't get it to work, can I substitute a decrease at either the beginning OR end of every row, instead of two decreases every other row?)
