This pattern was designed for an afghan to be donated to Project Linus, a charity that donates blankets to kids in hospitals. Project Linus requires that all blankets must be made using acrylic, but the pattern could be used for any yarn. The design was inspired by the granny square and the fact that Arizona is a warm climate. The open, airy feel of the stitch allows the blanket to be cuddly without being bulky.

Worsted weight acrylic:
MC—variegated pink and purple (approx 16 oz)
CC—solid pink (approx 16 oz)

This patterns is designed to be a template, therefore, specific gauge is based on individual hook choice and intended size. The directions for the foundation chain are given in multiples so it can be crocheted to desired width.

Body:

Foundation Chain:
With MC, ch [multiple of 4 sts plus 3] for desired length.

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (First ch-3 counts as dc here and throughout), dc in next 2 dc, *ch 2, skip next ch, 1 dc in next 3 chs, (3dc group formed). Repeat from * to end, 1 dc in last ch. Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch-2 sp), turn.

Row 2: Skip first 3dc group (Note: all 3dc groups are worked into ch-2 spaces across), *3dc group in next ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * to end. Dc in last dc, change to CC. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Work 3dc group in first ch-2 sp, *ch 2, 3dc group in next ch-2 sp. Repeat form * to end. Dc in last dc. Ch 5, turn.

Row 4: Skip first 3dc group (Note: all 3dc groups are worked into ch-2 spaces across), *3dc group in next ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * to end. Dc in last dc, change to MC. Ch 3, turn.

Row 5: Work 3dc group in first ch-2 sp, *ch 2, 3dc group in next ch-2 sp. Repeat form * to end. Dc in last dc. Ch 5, turn.

Repeat Rows 2-5 until desired length, ending on 2 MC rows. Fasten Off.

Edging:

Rnd 1: With right side facing and CC, join in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3, work dc evenly around entire blanket, with 3 dc in corner. Join with sl st in first dc. Change to MC. Do NOT turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining. Sc in each dc around. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
