Cotton Thread Sun Hat

Introduction

This hat began as a doodle during my travels up to Vermont to see my folks. I was playing with my favorite old doily pattern - The Plate Doily, from 1917. As the doodle grew, it was feeling really nice in my hands; a good floppy drape, but sturdy.
It grew throughout the weekend. At a concert a friend asked what I was making. I said I don't know, probably a hat! I decided to put a brim on it when I got home, and Voila! a sun hat!

Materials List

E - 3.5mm hook
less that 200 yards fingering weight cotton thread (I used Numei cotton breeze, color: shell)
yarn needle

Finished Size

hat measures 7 inches, 18 cm wide at top, 3 inches,7.5 cm high for the side, and the brim is 2 inches, 5 cm wide. My head is 22 inches, 56 cm around and it fits me well, a little on the snug side so it stays on in the wind, but does not leave it's mark on my forehead when I take it off!!

Gauge

6 sc per inch, 6 sc per 2.5 cm

Notes

The reason I love The Plate Doily Pattern is that you really get into a rhythm once you get to know it. It progresses with a very simple logic that is easy to follow.

The pattern is worked in two parts.

Part one - increase one sc between each ch3 loop for each round
Part two - decrease one sc between loops and increase 1 ch3 loop per round

The pattern is worked in the round with no joining or turning.

Now you know the basic logic behind the pattern and you are free to play with it as you like!

Okay! My work is done.

Ha! Ha! Just kidding!

Below is a full round by round write up of my sun hat!

The Pattern

worked in the round with no joining or turning
mark the first stitch of each round to keep track of rounds

Top of hat

note -
You can adjust the width of the hat by adding or subtracting rounds before round 11.
Continue the pattern of increase if you add rounds.

1. 8 sc in magic ring, or work 8 sc in a loop made of ch3 joined with a slip stitch if you must!
2. 2sc in each sc around
3. (sc, sk 1 sc, ch1) repeat around
4. (2sc in next sc, skip ch1 loop, ch2) repeat around
note - always skip the ch loop unless otherwise stated
5. (sc in next 3 sc, ch2) repeat around
6. (sc in next 4 sc, ch2) repeat around
7. (sc in next 5 sc, ch3*) repeat around *note loops are ch3
8. (sc in next 6 sc, ch3) repeat around
9. (sc in next 7 sc, ch3) repeat around
10. (sc in next 8 sc, ch3) repeat around
11. repeat round 10
12. (sc in next 7 sc, ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)* repeat around
*note sc in next ch 3 loop means place the sc around the ch3, not in any one stitch
13. (sc in next 6 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)2x ) repeat around
14. (sc in next 5 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)3x ) repeat around
15. (sc in next 4 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)4x ) repeat around
16. (sc in next 3 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)5x ) repeat around
17. (sc in next 2 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)6x ) repeat around
18. (sc in next 1 sc, (ch3, sc in next ch3 loop)7x ) repeat around
19. (sc in next ch3 loop, ch3) repeat around
20. (sc in next ch3 loop, ch2*) repeat around *note loops are ch2
21. (sc in next ch2 loop, ch1*) repeat around *note loops are ch1

Side of hat

note -
You can adjust the height of the hat by adding or subtracting rounds in this part.

22-25. ((sc in next ch1 loop, ch1)x7), ch3 repeat around
26-30 ((sc in next ch1 loop, ch1)x5), (ch3, skip 1 ch1 loop, sc in next ch1 loop)x2) repeat around
cotton thread sunhat finished
Brim of hat

note -
If you prefer a less ruffly brim, make fewer stitches in round 32
ie (2sc in next sc, sc in next 2 or 3 sc) instead

31. sc in each sc and ch1 loop around
32. (2sc in next sc, sc in next sc) repeat around
33. sc around
34. (2sc in next sc, sc in next 5sc) repeat around
35. sc around
36. (sc in next sc, skip next 2 sc, ch3) repeat around
37. repeat round 35

I hope the directions are clear and that you have fun with this pattern!

Hi!
I followed this pattern and made a blue hat (I know it's the wrong season, but hey! Summer will be back next year!). I really like the idea of using an old pattern and making it into something new. However, I did have some trouble at the middle of the top. I looked at your pictures but my pattern didn't look quite the same so I started over and figured it out by looking at the pics instead. I don't know if it was just me but i thought it was a bit unclear on where to put the ch3 loop, but I figured out it should be like a fish net or somehing like that. Anyway, I had no problems with the rest of the pattern. The side looks really good and the brim too. Thank you for the pattern!

Hi Stina,

I'd love to see a picture of your blue hat! I will double check the pattern for the part you had trouble with and try to make it more clear.

mad for crochet! Hello again Stina, I know it took me a while to get back to this, but I added a note in round 12 of the pattern that I hope will help clarify things. If you get a chance, could you look at it and see if it helps? Thanks!
ps I want to see your blue hat!!

Well, if only I knew how to post pictures here! I just started a flickr account but don't really understand what to do. As soon as I figure it out I'll post two pictures!

I don't have the hat anymore which means I will have to crochet a new one for me. I looked at your note and think that it is sufficient, but i will tell you for sure when I've made the hat again!

Hi, Sarah! I love this pattern so much I started an account just so I could ask you this question: what size thread should I be looking for to get fingering weight? I'm not familiar with the one you listed in your materials. I would normally use Royale's size 3 for a project with an E hook. Can't wait to get started on this one!

Thanks,
Sally

Hi Sally,
I am so glad you like the pattern! I suggest that you do some swatches with your thread and hooks of different sizes until you get the gauge stated in the pattern. The difficult thing about sizing and gauge is that everyone crochets differently. Have fun and don't hesitate to ask more questions. I am pretty new at writing patterns, so any comments you have will be helpful.

Sarah, I'm now almost through with my second hat with this pattern! The Royale size 3 works like a charm with a D hook. The first one was off-white with the last two rounds worked in teal, and the second one is bright green. I like the contrast trim so well that I might have to do the same with this one. I'll post a picture to my flickr page if you'd like. As for the pattern.... I'll confess I wasn't exactly sure what to do with the instructions for the sides of the hat, so I ended up just doing (sc, ch 1) for as many rounds as I needed for it to be as long as I wanted, then proceeded with the brim. Also, I don't know what a magic ring is. Still, though, your instructions were clear enough that I now have two new hats waiting for the spring to come!

If you aren't sure how to do the magic ring that is mentioned in this pattern and a lot of patterns lately here is a wonderful website that explains it really well and shows a video of making most stitchs and even patterns for every kind of flower too. It is found at this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLuSVyKvoUg If you paste this into your address bar it will take you right to the video showing you how to make the magic circle. This lady has a lot of different hat patterns too that she actually sits and crochets from beginning to end and she talks as she videos herself crocheting everything from hats, basic stitchs and so many flowers!! Her name is Teresa and she is an angel!! Of course I love all the people that share thei patterns just like this cute sunhat!!!! Thanks so much for this darling sunhat! I cannot wait to make it! My goal is to have more different patterns for hats than are available anywhere in stores at my Etsy shop. I am aiming on making winter hats in all styles, headbands with matching wristlets (fingerless gloves), scarves etc. Mostly have adult and girl hats right now but I am going to be listing baby hats since they sell all the time. I do this to make a little bit of income since I am disabled. Believe it or not I have fibromyalgia and arthritis in my hands. I hope that I helped you with your question about the magic ring and I hope that you will stop by my shop and take a look too! I would appreciate any feedback you could give me about my shop. I am a newer shop on Etsy and it is very hard to get it going? Good luck with all your projects and I know you will love the advice at the website that I gave you!! :-)
Thanks and happy hooking!

Hello,

I am very new to crocheting anything but granny square blankets! I recently shrunk my sun hat in the wash and thought I might try to make one. I love your hat and have tried to follow your pattern. I have made a mistake on the top as I didn't finish the rounds with the chians so I have one double wide point but it has worked out ok. Now I am doing the sides and I have round 22 - 25 done but when I started the next round instructions my hat starts to curve under itself (like a beanie would) is this right? Can I just keep doing the same all the was down?
I have used wool instead of cotton (for my practice hat) and if it goes well all my girls will get one!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this pattern up!

Also, when you say 'sc around' after a round with chaining, do you sc into the chain stitches or just one sc into the loop?
