The Pattern

Ch 28, make a ring. Ch 3 (=1dc), 1 dc in 1st ch, 2 dc in each st, sl st in 3rd ch.
Ch 3 (=1 dc), 1 dc in 3rd ch, 1 dc in next st * 2 dc, 1 dc, in 2 next two sts * continue from * to *, 1 sl st in 3rd ch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Next circle:
Ch 28, make a ring going through the first ring – continue as described over.

The third circle goes through both of these circles. The fourth circle goes through the second and third circle, and so one, till desired length.

If this doesn't make sense to you, please read ktutcher's comment under, that explains it brilliantly. Thanks, ktutcher!

This is awesome! Thanks for posting!

Great idea for all the scrap yarn that I have!

I absolutely love this scarf, but (feeling very stupid) I don't understand the pattern. Can anyone say just in words how the scarf works? It's just beautiful!

Submitted by missvonniev on 7 February 2008 - 7:12pm.

In just plain words I think this is what the scarf is:

Crochet a circle using the first paragraph of instructions. End it and weave in the ends. This will look like a doughnut.

Then make the next 28 stitch chain, pass one end through the first doughnut before joining the ends and make your second circle and weave in ends.. This should start to look like the paper chains I made as a kid.

Make another 28 stitch chain, then pass it through both of the other circles. Make your third circle and weave in ends.

Make a 4th 28 stitch chain, pass it through the 2nd circle and the 3rd circle, join the ends and continue.

Every circle you add to the 'chain' from now on will pass through the last two circles you made.

Now that I've made a fool of myself, please feel free to correct me if I've misunderstood this pattern. I plan on giving it a try this weekend.

Ooops - I forgot to mention it looks like each circle is a chain foundation with 2 rows after that.
row 1: CH3(=1DC), DC in same stitch, 2DC in each stitch, sl st in 3rd ch at beginning of row to join
Row 2: Ch 3 (=1 dc), 1 dc in 3rd ch (same stitch as chain), 1 dc in next st * 2 dc, 1 dc, in 2 next two sts * continue from * to *, 1 sl st in 3rd ch at beginning of row to join

Oh! Thank you SO much. I get it, now. I can see where it's like a paper chain. Brilliant scarf! Now I can't wait to make one (or more). :-) Thank you, thank you. I guess I do better with concepts than with patterns.

Thanks, Ktutcher, you've understood it right, and explained it much better than I did. Good luck everyone!

Torirot,

This is a great pattern. Thanks for sharing - I just don't have the vision to make up something like this on my own. I did some playing this weekend and really like it. I'm not happy with my color choices, I need to do some more stash diving before committing to a whole scarf but I see myself making LOTS of these in the future.

I'm making tis scarf right now as I type this comment. Quite Literally and its coming out great. Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't have ever thought of something so simple!

Hello-
I have made numerous "rings" following your directions as well as ktutcher's suggestions. When I do the chain of 28 and join and put 2 dc in each of the 28 stitches I get 56 dc in the first row. Then I increase by doing 2dc, 1dc for row 2. The end result is a very wavy, not flat circle. Mine do not look like those in the photo. What am i doing wrong? Please help

In the 2nd round you should make 2dc, and then 1 dc in the two next dc's. If I understand you right, you have made 2 dc, 1 dc, throughout the round, which will result in too many stitches, and a wavy in stead of flat look. Does that make sens to you, or have I misunderstood?

Hi-
Thanks for your last response. Anyway, even following your directions I still get a very wavy result. The following is what I did and the number of stitches in each row:
1. Chain 28 and join with a slip stitch.(28 stitches)
2. Chain 3, and 1DC in the first stitch, then 2 DC in each stitch around the chain resulting in 56 DC, join in third chain. (56 stitches)
3. Chain 3 and 1 DC in the third chain, 1 DC in the next stitch, *2DC in next stitch, then 1DC in next two stitches* continue around. (78 stitches)

The ring was already wavy after the row of DC (56 total)
The # of stitches was 78 at the end.

Question: Are the initial DC's to be done in the chain itself or over the chain?

Needless to say I really want to make this scarflette but just cannot get it correct. Other people seem not to have a problem so there must be something I'm not getting. If there is anything or anyway you can write this more explicitly, I would appreciate hearing from you again. Thanks so much. jillybean

Hi

It's such a long time since I made this scarflette, and I have given it away, so I can't check how it was done. But I have tried to make a ring, following my own instructions, which are not very good, I must admit. And it does turn out more wavy than I remember. So I think maybe there is an error on the first round.

Try this:
Ch 28, make a ring. Ch 3 (=1dc), 1 dc in 1st ch, *in next 2 sts work 1 dc in the first, 2 dc in the next* repeat from * to*, end with sl st in 3rd ch. (= 42 sts)
Ch 3 (=1 dc), 1 dc in 3rd ch, * in next three sts work 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in third st* repeat from * to * end with 1 sl st in 3rd ch. (= 56 sts) Cut yarn and fasten off.

The resulting ring was flat!

I'm sorry to have caused you this confusion! I'd be happy to hear from you if you try this.

Best wishes, Tori

Tori-
Thanks for your reply. I will try this today! What puzzles me is that when I read the other replies or comments, people seem to have understood and got the proper result. I'll try again. I crochet for charities and this would be a great scrap user, almost free since the yarn is often donated, and I think teenagers would really like how different and colorful it is. Thanks for trying to help. Regards, Jill

I had the same problem, and these new directions worked great for me. Thanks!
