LTC Scarf

Introduction
LTC = Learn To Crochet.
This scarf is great for teaching the basics of crochet. It’s simple enough that you can make it as long as you want by making your beginning chain longer (as long as it’s divisible by 3) You can also make it as wide as you like by repeating the rows until it’s what you like. Then you add the edging and Viola you’re done!
You can use any yarn that catches your eye too this is a great project!
Materials List
1 skein of worsted weight yarn, 200 - 366 yards (I use caron simply soft)
H (5 mm) hook
yarn needle
Finished Size
this scarf can be as long as you'd like it to be.
Gauge
this pattern is for learning how to crochet and the gauge isn't important.
Notes
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
Ch 3 counts as 1st dc.
Ch 2 counts as 1st hdc.
*For an added feminine touch you could use a length of ribbon and thread it through the edging and tie the ends in a sharp bow.
The Pattern

Body of scarf Ch 151
Row 1 Sc in 2nd chain from the hook. Sc across. (150 sts)
Row 2 Ch 3 counts as 1st dc. Dc across
Row 3 Ch 2 counts as 1st hdc. Hdc across
Row 4 Ch 3 counts as 1st dc. Dc across
Row 5 ch 1 sc across.
Edging, you will now be working all the way around the scarf.
Turn, Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) dc in next stitch. Ch 1. skip next stitch. *1 dc in
the next 2 stitches. Ch 1 skip next stitch. Repeat from * around. The corners
are made by ch 3 instead of ch 1. End with a ch 3 and join in the top of the
beginning ch 3.
Weave in all ends and enjoy!

Water Bottle Cover
Author
by Terry Heese
Introduction
We have a joke here in Florida: don't even walk to your mailbox without a bottle of water. It is a great stash buster, using less than one ounce of worsted yarn. It is worked all in one piece, so there is no need for sewing. It has a slight texture to it, so it won't slip out of your hand. The strap can go around your wrist or be clipped onto your gym bag as well. It is thin enough so you can put it in the drink holders in your car, with no sweat! Using acrylic worsted makes it easy to wash and dry. It will keep your water cool, and always at your fingertips.
Materials List
One ounce of worsted weight yarn
Size G hook
Needle for finishing
Finished Size
Fits a 16.9 oz bottle, but can be modified to fit a larger bottle.
Gauge
4 sts and 4 rows = 1"
Notes
Gauge is not critical in this project.
The Pattern
The bottom is worked in rounds:
With G hook, Ch 3, sl st in first ch to form a loop.
Rd 1: Ch 1. In loop, 6 sc. Sl st in first sc to join. 6 sc
Rd 2: Ch 1. *2 sc in each sc*, repeat. Join. 12 sc
Rd 3: Ch 1. *1 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat. Join. 18 sc
Rd 4: Ch 1. *2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat. Join. 24 sc
Rd 5: Ch 1. *3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat. Join. 30 sc
Optional row, for larger water bottles:
Rd 6: Ch 1. * 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat. Join. 36 sc
Side: Now working ONLY IN THE BACK LOOP in continuous rounds:
Work 1 sc in back loop only of each sc. Continue working in back loop only until the side measures 6”, or desired length. End with sl st.
For loop handle: Ch 40, sl st in same sc as ending sl st.
Easy mulitpurpose scrubber
Author
Introduction
Here’s a quick and easy double‐sided scrubber that can be used for cleaning anywhere from the kitchen to the garage! Soft but durable cotton yarn on one side, and a tough nylon yarn on the other that won’t scratch non‐stick surfaces, chrome bumpers or bathtubs…how’s that for multitasking!
Easy to customize, make it larger by using a bigger hook or by adding to your foundation chain and increasing the number of rows.
Materials List
• I used a 4mm hook/size G6
• Small amounts of cotton and nylon yarn – I used Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (medium/4) and Needloft 2 ply Plastic Canvas Yarn.
Finished Size
My completed scrubber is about 3.5 by 4.25 in, or about 9 by 11 cm.
Gauge
Not important for this project.
Notes
To clean, machine wash in cold water with a mild detergent; air dry only! (I’m not sure what nylon yarn does in the dryer, but it’s probably not pretty!)
The Pattern
Row 1: with nylon yarn, ch 15. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across to starting ch. (14 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn. Working in back loops, sc across. (14 sc)
Rows 3 – 10: repeat row 2. Fasten off and weave ends in.
With cotton yarn, repeat rows 1 to 10. Do not fasten off. Ch 1, turn.
Holding both pieces together (there is no right or wrong side), and working through both layers, sc in first st and across to first corner; work 3 sc in corner and sc evenly across ends of rows. Repeat around, ending with 3sc in last corner and sl st to first sc. If you’d like to add a hanging loop, after 3sc in corner, ch 10, and sl st to first sc.
Finish off and weave ends in.

Way too colorful hat
Author
By Sue B. Balcom
Introduction
I came across this post pattern in a Vogue knitting magazine and was intrigued by the colors used to make a straight skirt. Of course, I thought wow, that would make an easy color change hat. My children think it looks Rastafarian. It would make a great beret or bag also. I was thinking even felted it may be a really cool fabric.
Materials List
1 skein each of four or more colors of washable wool
Size H crochet hook (or size to match gauge)
Colors of hat in the photo are
A – orange
B – gold
C – turquoise
D – purple
This hat is made from Lamb’s Pride Superwash
Size G (4.5 mm) crochet hook or size you usually use for making hats in the round. Hat will be looser with larger hook and tigher with smaller hook.
Finished Size
Measures 8.5" ((21.5 cm) from top to bottom. Approximately 23" or 58.5 cm around at widest point.
Gauge
15 pattern stitches and 9.5 double crochet rows = 4"x4" or 10 cm x 10 cm. This is measured on the non-increase rows.
Notes
In the first few rows the treble becomes the increase stitch necessary to create a flat circle. Once you begin crocheting with no increase, the pattern requires a skipped dc stitch to accommodate the treble. Basically three stitches on three stitches. Feel free to experiment with the color changes, it turns out different every time.
Double Crochet = dc
Treble Crochet = trc
Pattern stitch = Two rows of double crochet, followed by a row of two double crochet stitches and one treble. The treble is worked in the first row of the pattern. The color change is two rows of one color and one row of another color
The Pattern
Row 1: (Color A) With open loop method, make 9 double crochet (dc) in the loop and pull snug.
Row 2: Two dc in each stitch, total of 18 stitches
Row 3: (Color B) Pattern Stitch - *dc in first two stitches, treble crochet (tc) around first dc in first row.* repeat pattern for a total of 27 stitches with 9 stitches into row 1.
Row 4: (Color C) *Double crochet one in first two stitches, inc in next stitch;* repeat between * for a total of 38 stitches.
Row 5: Double crochet in each stitch = 38 stitches.
Row 6: (Color B) Pattern stitch = 57 stitches.
Row 7: (Color D) Double crochet in first two stitches, inc. in next stitch; repeat between * for a total of 75 stitches.
Row 8: One double crochet in each stitch = 75 stitches.
Row 9: (Color B) *Double crochet in next two stitches; Treble around first dc two rows back. Skip one dc* repeat between *.
To End: Continue with two rows of dc in each dc and then a pattern row changing; colors as you desire,
When hat is long enough, end with a row of sc working in front loop, then back loop alternately until end, slipstitch, fasten off, hide ends… GO skiing.

Recycle your old-non-useful CD's into beautiful coasters
Introduction
http://www.flickr.com/photos/honeyvarita/3523348008/
My mug and my diffussor were unhappy placed on an old CD, but the CD felt it was still useful, so I decided to add some thread, and imagination, for making nice coasters
Materials List
-Old CD's
-Thread, scraps, about 1-2 oz
-2 crochets 2mm (N° 4 steel crochets), one for work the sc , the other to bring the yarn up
Finished Size
12-14 cm diam (4.8-5" diam)
Gauge
Not important
Notes
You can see the CD, but that is nice too.
The Pattern
Add thread to an old CD, with one crochet, do sc at the outside border, the other one is for bringing the thread for work.
Follow the line of the diam., so no thread will be on top of more thread.
I made shells
1 row : 1 sc,1hdc, 2dc, 1tc, 2dc, 1hdc, 1 sc all in a previous sc, skip 2 sc, shell, all around the border
2 row, ch 5, sc on top of treble, ch 4, ss on first ch (picot made), ch 5, sc between shells.
Iron with steam or a wet towel.
I also made it with simple flowers, or mimic a spider web with a little spider, they look very nice.

Chunky Tapestry Crochet Baskets
Author
Erssie Major
Introduction
Bright and colourful baskets are made from scraps of chunky wool by making a circular 2 colour or 3 colour spiral base, then making the sides using simple motifs and tapestry crochet See Carol Ventura's blog for more on that technique.
These are firm baskets blocked to shape. The yarn is chunky and the hook is fairly small making it easier to cover carried colours but also gives the baskets their firmness.
NOTE: THIS PATTERN IS WRITTEN IN UK CROCHET STYLE
THEREFORE dc = sc in US CROCHET STYLE
Use dc (sc) throughout in the back loops only
Materials List
Large Basket
4 x 50g Chunky Wool (shown here in Texere chunky)
A: Bright Pink
B: Bright Aqua
C: Green
D: Purple
1 x 3.5mm hook (Clover soft touch is best)
Small Basket
Materials
Small amounts of
Yarn A
Yarn B
Yarn C
Finished Size
Any size you want, depends on how large you make the base...just continue making the spiral until the base is desired size
Size Shown
Large approx 18cm diameter
Small approx 7 cm diameter
Gauge
Not essential, but make sure you use a much smaller hook to get tight tension and a stiff basket. I used chunky for a normal knitting needle size of around 6mm, but my hook was 3.5 mm.
Notes
To change colours, on last stitch before the new colour, whilst 2 lps are on the hook drop working colour and bring to front of work, pick up new colour and pull through the 2 lps.
Make sure that you have a multiple of 12 sts to fit in the motifs so when finishing the bottom, either stop at correct point, or you could increase or decrease a few sts on last rnd of bottom to fit. I started to work in the opposite direction, this was so that the right side of the bottom is on the inside of the basket, and the RS of sides face outwards.
Working in back loops only (this helps to shape the motifs used later) work in straight rnds, of 1 dc in every dc using tapestry crochet motifs and outer circle starts to curl and then you are working in even rnds in a tube shape for the top of the basket.
The Pattern
Large Basket
Bottom
Two Colour Spiral
With Yarn A, make a slip knot, but unlike your slipknot that pulls in or expands easily when pulling the working yarn, make sure that your slipknot is adjustable by pulling the tail of the yarn
Using the working end of yarn A, make 1 ch (to count as 1 dc) and 2 dc into the slipknot ring (3dc)
Using yarn B, make 1 ch (to count as 1 dc) and 2 dc into the slipknot ring made from yarn A (3dc)
Pick up yarn A again and make 2 dc into the top of each of the 3 dc of yarn B that you made into the ring (6dc)
Pick up yarn B and make 2 dc into the top of each of the 3 dc of yarn A that you made into the ring (6dc)
One rnd is complete, and there should be a total of 12 dc, half in colour A and half in the other colour B.
Now pull the tail of yarn A, from the original slipknot, and tighten the ring in the middle to make the stitches snug.
You are now ready to continue working in a spiral.
Work half the rnd in A, remove your hook and complete the other half of the rnd in B always making sure you are going in the same direction.
I used 2 colours in this way to make the bottom of the larger basket. You need to use the same rules for increasing a flat circle as follows:
Increases
In the first rnd work 2 dc in each stitch
Next rnd 1 dc in next st, 2dc in next st
Next rnd 1dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next st
Continue to increase in this way, putting one more dc in between each of the decrease dc's on each rnd until the basket bottom is the diameter you wish it to be. Make sure the last round is a multiple of 12 stitches, or increase on the last rnd to make a multiple of 12 sts.
Main Body of Basket
Make sure that you have a multiple of 12 sts to fit in these motifs start to work in the opposite direction, so that the right side of the bottom is on the inside of the basket, and the RS of the sides is shown on the outside.
Working in back loops only (this helps to shape the motifs used later) work in straight rnds, of 1 dc in every dc (i.e. without increasing) using tapestry crochet motifs and the outer circle will start to curl and then you are working in even rnds in a tube shape for the top of the basket.
Hounds Tooth Motif Band
Still working back loops only and 1 dc in each dc:
Rnd 1: 1dc in ev dc using Yarn B
Rnd 2: *3dc Yarn B, 1 dc Yarn D, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 3: 2dc Yarn B, *3dc Yarn D, 1dc Yarn B rep from * to last 2dc, 2dc Yarn D
Rnd 4: As rnd 2
Rnd 5: As rnd 1
Plain rnd
Still working back loops only and 1 dc in each dc:
2 rnds in Yarn C (green)
Diagonal Motifs Band
Still working back loops only and 1 dc in each dc:
Rnd 1: 1dc in ev dc using Yarn B
Rnd 2: 2dc Yarn D, 2dc Yarn B rep from * to end
Rnd 3: 1 dc Yarn D, 2 dc Yarn B, 2 dc Yarn D rep to last 3dc, 2 dc Yarn B, 1 dc Yarn D
Rnd 4: 2 dc in Yarn B, 2 dc in yarn D to end of rnd
Rnd 5: As rnd 1
Plain rnd
Still working back loops only and 1 dc in each dc:
2 rnds in Yarn C (green)
Fasten off.
Finish edge using Crab Stitch as explained below.
Small Basket
Bottom
3 Coloured Spiral
Join together 3 colours as a spiral, exactly as for 2 colour spiral explained above and as follows:
Using yarns A, B, and C make an initial 3dc each into the slipknot of yarn A, then made dc's into the next yarns in sequence, so
A worked 3dc into B,
B worked 3 dc into C,
and C worked 3 dc into A.
All travelling in the same direction and working in a spiral.
Continue to work all 3 yarns by making a dc in next dc's for a few sts, then removing hook and working another section. This will make a cylinder shape with stripes spiralling around to the top.
For this smaller pot, I stopped making a circle on 4th rnd, and then just worked one dc into every dc for the top part of the basket, finishing with yarn D.
Fasten off when required height.
Finishing Both Baskets
Crab Stitch Edging
You can find tutorials online (see Resources)
To finish off the baskets, use good old fashioned crab stitch. Attach a contrast coloured yarn, here I used Yarn B.
This stitch doesn't so much go sideways as completely backwards.
Pull the hook with a loop on, into the stitch behind the current stitch i.e. backwards, then pull another loop through, and pull up 2 loops and pull the yarn through these 2 loops, and then work backwards again....repeating this sort of gives a cross between a blanket stitch edge or a picot edge in look, you can see where your 2 final loops get pulled around the edge of the basket.
Fasten off, and wrap last bit of yarn around the edge of last stitch twice, secure and weave end on the inside.
How to Block Your Baskets
Wash them both in fairly hot water for a semi felt to stiffen the wool but to keep the shape and size, whilst it is still damp and hot put the large basket onto a flower pot, so it takes the shape of it gradually widening with the flower pot
Put the small basket around a bottle or small pot.
Both baskets can put onto a radiator or in the airing cupboard near warm pipes to dry and when the pots are removed, they take on the shape of them perfectly. If you don't mind a fair amount of shrinkage, you could completely felt them but do remember to try and reshape whilst felting otherwise you could get a shapeless mess.
