Pattern making

Categorized As:

OK, stuck in a horid pattern I had on my blog. Inserting the image didn't work. Emoticons not there. Everything else OK, but what is the thumb thing?

Used Firefox on a PC with Windows XP.

Images: The problem seems to be with blogger's server. Try clicking the link:

When I do that I'm prompted to download the image... what should happen is that it should just appear in my browser window....

The thumb thing: the image that will be used as the display image. Unresolved on how to deal with this for new patterns.

OK, I tried the link and got:

"FORBIDDEN

Your client does not have permission to get URL /s1600 from this server."

So, I went in and tried to add a picture from Flickr. I did it in the introduction section at the end of the text, adn since it didn't show in the text box I did it again before previewing...my bad because it's there twice now, but still not in the text box on the edit page so I don't know how to get rid of it.

Still ona PC using Firefox. :)

I think images are now working within the pattern... because we removed a bunch of stuff so now you can only click the tree to add a picture (and enter the URL).

The thumb thing has been changed to a URL for "Pattern Icon." I/Kim needs to add some kind of language about how to choose a good icon. I think for now this will just be a URL to an off-site image. (Which may duplicate an image that's already in the pattern.)

Let me know what you think.... (Yes, I know the URL is showing up on teh display page, I need to fix many things on the display page.)

Yes, I tried adding a pattern and the images worked for me now.  Thanks!

I couldn't get the pattern icon to work, yet.  But I'm assuming you are working on that.

Everything is looking great!

Spanky -- any chance we can automate thumbnail generation, and have those thumbnails hosted on our server? Or, wait. That might open up a HOST of rights issues. Ok. What about this:

2 options: One is for users to link to a thumbnail-sized image off-site. The second is for users (ONLY for thumbnails) upload the thumbnail image -- it will automagically be resized and used as the thumbnail for the pattern. This won't be too much of a burden on the server, since it'll only be for thumbnails, and once the upload/resize is done, it'll only be serving a small file. What do you think?

I think upload an image for thumbnail is fine... in fact I wonder if it should be *ONLY* upload.

I'm worried that if people have an either/or choice they'll fill in both and then we'll have to have some kind of logic that says how we decide which gets used (which would be annoying because 50% of the time we'd be wrong).

What do you think about having an upload ONLY for the thumbs?

Actually... why not have an upload for "finished item" which is translated into the thumb and a standard sizing for the first image on the pattern page. It would become the first image displayed on the pattern itself and then people could use off-site images as supplemental if they wanted?

Have I mentioned lately how big a crush I have on you? You're a genius, and that's perfect. We'll need some sort of way to handle portrait vs. landscape orientation for the main image (landscape should have max width of 540px or so; portrait should have max width of about 300px and max height of 500px).

Ok, I think I've got it properly enabled for the uploads and the resizing... but I need someone to upload a pattern (AND IMAGE) so that I can get the display working as well.

Thanks!

Initial issue resolved. But the new solution needs to be tested. Please start a new forum topic if there is a new problem.
