Emoticons in text editor don't show up in post

So, Dawn sent my alter-ego a PM and used an emoticon handily provided by TinyMCE. But the emoticon didn't show up in the message I read; it did, however, show up in the rich text editor for my reply. Is that a path thing for the images?

I see the emoticon there.... Is it a browser thing?
