Notify?

Categorized As:

Hey Spanky,

I just activated the Notify module, hoping it would do what the "subscription" module does on the current site: enable users to choose to be notified by email when a comment has been posted to a page, or new content has been created (e.g., forum, etc.). I changed the access rules correctly, but can't find any indication that the module is set up. Is it that this module doesn't do what I thought it does, or that it's fubar (or that I'm fubar)? Or does it automatically subscribe a user to a page they've created or commented on?

Ok, I just noticed the "notification settings" link on my profile page. I enabled it (woo hoo!), but don't understand the scope. Will I be notified of *every single* new comment and new content posted to the site? That will get really annoying really fast. Is there a way for users to choose which content they're notified about (e.g., posts made to a particular forum, new patterns posted, comments made on content they've posted...)?

I think it's daily by default. So once a day you get a summary of everything new that's been posted. ... at least that's how I have it set up on another site. Typically cron jobs go off around midnight. CAn you let me know tomorrow if this is NOT how it worked?

Other than that: I think it's RSS based if you want to keep up to date on things. You'd need to look through the different modules though. I've only ever used the, "send me a daily summary" notify stuff....

I didn't get an update by email.

But I also don't think that's specific-enough functionality for this site. I either want to offer notifications for certain content (especially for comments; it would be best if users can choose to be alerted when someone posts a comment on content they created, or if they simply want to follow a discussion). I'll see if the Subscription module is 5.x ready.

If we can't do something like that, I'm not sure if we shouldn't just disable Notify -- or only enable it for admins. I can't think of many people besides me who would want a notification of *every single* new comment or post on a site this large.

Ok. Check. I'm going to install Subscriptions, which is a 5.x-ready version of the module I'm currently running. I'm going to set Notify only to be available to admin users.

Are you happy with Subscriptions? Should we set this to "resolved"?

Check. Have you tried it out? It's working nicely for me (I got an email about your comment, for ex). :)
