In Your Shoes Ankle Socks

Introduction
What's up with so many sock patterns calling for too-thick worsted weight yarn? Designer Pam says:
"I've seen a lot of crocheters looking for a pattern for crochet socks using sock yarn, so they can wear them in their shoes like the knitters do. That's what pushed me to make this pattern. I wanted to crochet my socks out of sock yarn, and wear them in my shoes." Right on, Pam.
Materials List
- About two 1.75 ounce (50 gram) skeins of sock yarn (or fingering weight yarn)
- Size G (4.25mm) crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
Finished Size
Gauge
5 sts x 5 rows = 1 inch (2.54cm) in single crochet. (Please be sure to check your gauge. I tend to need a larger hook than most patterns call for, so my patterns tend to call for a larger hook than you might need.)
Notes
The Pattern
Make two.
Chain 16 to work on 15 sts. This makes a 3-inch (7.62cm) wide cuff for ankle socks. If you want a bigger cuff, just add stitches.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook, and in each remaining ch across (15 sts). Ch 1, and turn.
Row 2: Sc in each back loop only, across (15 sts). Ch 1, and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 8 inches (20.32cm), or 1/2 inch (1.27cm) smaller than foot width.
Sew short ends together to form a tube. I slip stitch across so I don't have to cut the yarn, and re-attach it. (The seam will be the back of the sock.)
Sc around for 2 rounds (36 sts each round for the size I'm making here).
Sc across front half of tube (18 sts). Chain 18, and attach on the other side of the tube. (The space between the cuff and the chain is where the heel will go later.)
Sc around front sts and back chain (36 sts).
Sc around until piece measures 6 inches (15.24cm), or 1 1/2 inches (3.81cm) before toe decrease (excluding cuff).
Decrease 1 st on each side (that's 2 sts per round) for 1 1/2 inches (3.81cm) (it was about 7 rows for my sock).
Attach yarn at heel opening. Sc around once.
Sc around decreasing 1 st on each side for 1 1/2 inches (3.81cm). (You make the heel the same way as the toe decrease.)
Sew toe and heel seams.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)

I crocheted these in 2 days. I used Plymouth's Dream Baby DK yarn, sooo soft. I really love this pattern and see lot's of socks in my and my family and friend's future!!!!
this is amazing. im a fast crocheter so it only took me 4 hours. i was sooo amazed at how easy it was. im a knitter too and the socks are very hard to do. crocheting is my profession. and i was verry excited thank you soo much!

Okay, I have a question. Is there any way you can make these taller than ankle socks? I'm forever wearing out my tall socks.

Suck! I cannot get this to work the heel is always too tight even making adjustments. It is the chain and cuts into my foot. SUCK I guess I am too stupid to have socks
Was glancing through options for crocheting websites and glanced upon this one. Then I saw your pattern for these socks! They rock! I understood every direction! I actually signed up as a member less than 10 minutes ago just because I wanted to tell you thanks. This sock pattern is fantastic. I'm hoping to find lots of great patterns on here.
Working on my third pair!
I made a 'test'pair out of Bernat baby yarn, and a pair as a birthday gift to my 84 yr old grandmother (who taught mehow to knit and crochet) with Yarn Bee 'Cameo' which is thicker, but I'm making 'house socks'
now my mother in law, and a sister in law are going to get a pair each for Christmas.

I just finished my first sock! Had to adjust along the way, guess because I crochet tighter than you do, or maybe the yarn was too fine. But no big. In fact, I finished it while I was sitting at my mother's watching a movie. I used Patton Brilliant yarn, because that's what I had [now that I know it works, I'll buy something better] After she got done laughing at my mistake [I made the toe too long and it looked like a genie slipper] she decided they were cooler than polar bear crap and decided she has to have a pair.
Guess what she's getting for mother's day?
I found this pattern through an on-line search, and it is the best crochet sock pattern I found. I'm almost done with the first sock. Thank you so much for coming up with this pattern!

I love these socks! I made them out of sock yarn and had an amazing finished product. The only problem, I have sensitive feet and the wool yarn was a little rough. I'm going to try some of the yarns used by other crocheters and get a softer feel for the footsies!

I am so very excited as I have crocheted for many years and I always wanted to crochet socks that you could wear with shoes. Knitted ones take to long and are hard to learn. Your sock pattern was a wish come true Thank You so so much Pam. I do want to comment on the negative remark left by someone no names need to be said. It sure is funny that every comment about the socks were positive except yours. There is no question as to where the problem lies, it is not the sock pattern it is you. I hope you are not always such a angry person. It is so unhealthy.
OK, I'm making these and I have a couple of questions. (I'm sort of new to crochet, so be gentle).
In the step where you sew the ribbed ankle piece together, you indicate that the seam will be at the back of the sock. I assume you mean centered above the heel. Then you sc for two rows, which will begin and end at the seam if you do not tie off and re-position (and you indicated you don't do that).
On row 3 you are to sc 18 across the front and chain 18. If you do this right where the third row would start, you are still above the center back seam, which would put the seam above the ankle if you start and end there. Do you sl st 9 to get to the place that would allow you to start the third row across the front of the sock? Is this making sense?
Also, when you get to that point and are crocheting the body of the sock, are you just doing continuous sc or do you sl st and ch1 at the end of each row? Or does it matter? (Personally, I hate the sl st/ch1. I must be doing it incorrectly because there's a stitch that's always tight, and I end up with a different number of stitches. When I can get away with it, I just work in a continuous round and put a marker in to keep track of rows.)
Anyway, I hope this makes sense. I don't know why I have such a problem with patterns. I can stitch just fine, and I can granny square with the best of them, but unless I'm making something that can stay a square or rectangle, I fear my crochet project days are numbered.

This pattern rules! I've finished one sock using Patons Bamboo Silk yarn and a 3.25-ish hook. My only warning is that the 8 inches reccommended for the cuff might be too big for some people (I have narrow feet). But the nature of the pattern makes it very easily adapted--just change the measurements given--for instance I made the cuff 6 inches instead of 8 and it fit perfectly!

This is the worst pattern ever. i used lionbrand magic stripes and checked my gage and followed this pattern to a T. the heel didn't even cover my heel and i stretched them out trying to attempt to get one on. anyone else have probs with this pattern?
You increase the number of sts in the ch at the beginning. Like, if you wanted the cuff to be 2 times larger you'd ch 31 and work over 30 sts instead of 15. That should do the trick.

I finished making these socks and enjoyed them a lot. I had to make my ankles/cuffs smaller because I have skinny ankles (but not the rest of me). Thanks for the pattern and instructions. Sure has helped me a lot with the heels and toes.
Mine actually look better on my feet than off my feet.
