I understand the point of these (especially after losing count of my stitches on round four), but I'm fuzzy on the how you use them. Where to "pin" them, etc?

(If I don't have proper ones, what's a good sub? A small safety pin?)

I've been looping the marker thru the 'v' on top, where you'd normally insert your hook to make a stitch. If you're working with taller stitches, you could loop it around the post of the stitch.

Sometimes I weave a few inches of crochet thread vertically to mark the beginning of a round.

Usually, a marker is to remind you to do something different at that point, so attach it so you won't ignore it. There is no other rule.

One other use - I loop a marker thru the loop of my last stitch when I put an unfinished project down so it won't unravel.

What to use? In the Tips and Tricks section, someone recommended plastic covered paperclips. I'll bet you can buy pretty beaded markers like knitters use, too.

That makes sense. Thanks, Pauline. (I'm trying to learn to crochet amigurumi.)

lever-backed earrings work nicely too, and they're attractive. you can buy them or make your own. I've also used whatever is handy--paperclips, barettes, safety pins, a piece of ribbon, etc. I also usually place it in the 'v' at the top of the stitch.
