Reading Crochet Instructions

I am confused by a bit of instruction, for clarity I will include the whole line.

"Foundation row: 3 d.tr into 7th ch from hook,* 1 ch, miss next ch, 1 d.tr into next ch, 1 ch, miss 1 ch, 3 d.tr into next ch; rep from * to within last 3 ch, ending with 1 ch, miss 1 ch, 1 d.tr into last ch; turn: 16 3-d.tr grs."

Ok, so I've done the line, made the turn stiches, now what does the "16 3-d.tr grs" mean? Does that mean do another line back as part of the Foundation row? And how do I group them? Or is that what the row was supposed to be?

It looks like that's the total number of dtr groups in the row; it's so you can check to make sure you're on track. One group = 3 dtr in the same ch.

Yep; that's what it looks like to me, too. Usually when there's something written after a colon, it means that's what you should have ended up with after following the preceding instructions. Mind you, it's still confusing if you're not aware of this. Normally it'd be written something like, "16 3-d.tr grs made". How much space do you think they saved by leaving out the word "made"?

In Interweave Crochet, we give row/round-end totals after an m-dash, as in "..., turn—16 dtr grps."

Those stitch and stitch group totals at the end of a row/round have made the difference in whether I finished a project or threw it away in frustration; especially in the early years of my crocheting.

I applaud any and all that care enough to add those at the end. Thank you!

Thanks so much for your help. Yes it makes much more sense now and I was completly off. . .luckily it was the foundation row!

Usually. And usually there are some words like "rep from *" to tell you what to do.
