Give the Ultimate Gift -- Crochet!

Everyone who knows you probably knows that you can crochet. So they ask you to make them a little (or big!) something. For those first few projects, you were so happy because you knew your recipient would appreciate your work. But the requests keep coming, and now you are swamped with a huge list of “Can you make me this?” stuff.  

After your 10th “Make me, Make me” item, aren’t you ready for something better?  Do you want more time to make something for yourself? I have the answer for you:  Spread the joy!  There is no reason why you should keep our craft to yourself.  It’s time to give everyone their own “Learn to Crochet” kit for the holidays. It’s the perfect gift! Think of how much fun it will be to spend the holidays crocheting with your family. You can introduce your family and friends to the joy of crocheting and reclaim a little crochet-time for yourself.

Here is my list of things to include in the kit, but the only real requirement is to make it fun!

1. One Bag -  Newbie crocheters won’t have a place to keep their yarn. The bag should be cute and functional.  Try a basket or a large pencil box. Anything that provides fun, useful storage for their project will do.


2. One skein of Yarn - Start them with yarn that is easy, soft, inexpensive, and light.  Even though you may love bouclé and mohair, do not start your friends off with these. Simple, manageable yarn will help to prevent frustration. I suggest a skein of Caron Simply Soft -- it’s easy to get and it’s reasonably priced.


3. A Hook -  A hook that is too big or too small can make learning to crochet unnecessarily complicated. Make sure they can see what they are doing and it’s not too cumbersome. A 5.0mm (size H) hook is a good option, but adjust as needed to match the yarn. I recommend an aluminum hook, but bamboo or steel are also good choices.


4. Tutorials -  There are lots of tutorials that your can download for free. Start with Crochet me’s tutorials on chain and single crochet.  Provide a 3-ring binder so that they have an organized reference place for tutorials and patterns. To guide them, you might include a list of your favorite crochet books and websites.


5. A Pattern - Pick something easy and fun. Crochet me has lots to offer here.  There’s a belt, a scarf, some finger puppets, and tons more.  Be sure to pick something that you like too, so you can make it along with them.


6. Swatches -  Throw in a few swatches to help them along. Swatches are a great way to know they are on the right track when you are not around.


7. Your Time - Plan time to show them how to crochet. Give them a gift certificate for you both to Starbucks, Panera, or your favorite hangout. Walking them through the basics will make learning easier, and give you the chance to enjoy time together.
