Yarn problems
I have this yarn that I would love to use and get out of my stash box. The problem: It was given to me with no tags. I don't know what it is. All I know is that it is very rough, course and not something you would want to wear.
the other problem (where you come in) any suggestions on what to make with it. There is a large ball, bit bigger than a softball, but that's it, no extra. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the yarn on my flickr account.

Sorry if I have done this wrong I'm new and trying to learn.

Hello Cassie,
Don't you find these odd balls really annoying? Especially when they're made of an unknown brand and fiber? Since you said it is coarse and scratchy, my guess it is made of a protein fiber, maybe wool, mohair, etc. Why don't you crochet a small square of it (use SC) and through it in the washer. If it felts some you will know it is made of animal fibers. If it doesn't, it is most likely made of washable wool or synthetics.
Once you narrow down the possible fiber choices you can move on to the pattern choosing. I agree 100% about not using it in making garments or anything that will be close to the skin. Why don't you go with something like a purse, belt, or this really adorable organizer featured in Crochet Today Magazine: http://www.crochettoday.com/articlepage.aspx?articleid=85
Here's a purse from the same issue:

I hope I gave you a few good ideas here.

Thanks! I was also given the idea to make a market bag. The yarn almost feels like a thin stringy rope, not the braided kind. I was wondering, what's the best way to felt it. I knitted up a swatch that either way, it will become the bottom of the bag, or maybe a pocket if it shrinks. I've never felted anything before, so I'm a little unsure how to do it. Thanks for any help!
Yes, I agree with Rebekah. Make a little swatch and felt it first. If it is feltable, there are lots of good things you can mek with scratch yarn. Bags and rugs are a start. If it's only a small ball there are some cute patterns for felted baskets and such. Good luck! Post your finished product for us!
