What is a tea cup cover?

Categorized As:

Last week, Crochet Pattern Central's new patterns included a "dainty tea cup cover". The photo showed a small mesh circle, about coaster size, draped over the top of a fancy tea cup. Because of the mesh, it wouldn't keep dust out of an empty cup or heat in a full cup. There was no explanation of what it did or why it was there. I've never seen or heard of such a thing, and I've been around for a very long time. Maybe it's something new? Do any of you know about tea cup covers?

I took a look at the pattern and I guess it is just a classy way to dress up a simple cup or a jar.

I've seen covers like these used on bowls and casserole dishes at picnics. It's to keep the insects out.
