VERY basic pattern question
Greetings, all. I saw a cute beaded bolero on Shay Pendray's show, and the directions are online through Coats&Clark. My question is what the "sp" (space) means in this context. Here's the pattern stitch:
Row 1 (Wrong Side): Ch 2, sc in ch-4 sp, ch 1, 7 dc in ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in ch-4 sp, ch 2.
So, you chain two, then what? Would it mean you single crochet in the next chain then skip four chain stitches, chain one, 7 double crochet in the same stitch then skip three stitches, chain one, single crochet in the next chain then skip four stitches and chain two?
Thanks VERY much for your patience. I have a half dozen crochet books but it's hard to catch on to this pattern-reading phase...

Hi Patti,
"sc in ch-4 sp" means to make an sc in the next space that was created by work "ch 4" in the previous row. To working into a ch sp, just insert your hook under the chains, not into a particular chain. Since this is Row 1, I'm not sure where the sp comes from, but hopefully this helps you make sense of the pattern?

Kim, thanks SO much for making it clear. The directions I cited for Row 1 were just for the pattern stitch; I think there were some foundation rows that preceded the pattern stitch.

I'm working on a throw from Lion Brand's website, and I have to tell you, I had the exact same problem for a while... took me a while to figure out what in the world they were talking about!
My issue with the pattern now is that it's not actually symmetrical. When you finish the round, it all looks the same, but while you're working on it it's not the same on both sides - it's messing with my head!
