Vertical Seams in sweaters

Categorized As:

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to sew seams so there isn't that hole on one side? I just started to stitch a seam together for a few stitches and stopped because of the holes on the one side created by the ch 3 that act as the first dc. I don't want that hole to be there and the only thing I can think of is to by pass the chain and hook onto the first full dc. But that will make the top at least a 1/2 inch smaller and cause a bulkier seam. I am using a woven seam whipstitch style on a vertical seam. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Everyone I know only knits so I have no one but myself to find the answer.

One way is to use a different stitch in place of the turning chain, but I don't think you want to rip back your finished pieces right now.

I'd fake it somehow and loosely catch a bit of the next dc in a separate sewing stitch as I caught up the chain 3. Or even work the edges by loosely sewing the turning chain to the next stitch on each piece, keep it flexible, before sewing the pieces together.

For next time:

Some instructions say to ch 2 for a dc turning chain. It may make the gap smaller, not sure, haven't tried it.

I like this way to make a thicker turning stitch. The instructions begin at least half way into the video, after the tidying up bit. http://megan.kiwi.gen.nz/EndsAndColours/

Good luck.
