turn then chain, chain then turn?!

Categorized As:

This may seem like a basic question, but I haven't seen it addressed in my tutorial books until now (my fourth one) and I'm confused. Does it make a difference if you make your beginning chain for the next row before you turn versus after? I have been turning and then chaining for everything I've made to date (three years) and can't say I've noticed any problems from it. This book says specifically when making its patterns to pay attention to when you turn and chain. Why does it matter?

I'm not sure it matters, but I could be missing a subtlety. Maybe the book is just trying to get you to do the turning chain consistently. Try it both ways on a narrow sample to see if you can tell a difference.

I think I usually chain then turn, but I'm not sure, LOL. My currrent project is knitting, so I can't grab it and try. Wait, I've been using a 'fat' chain, looks better, and the turn is part way thru. See it here, about 2 minutes in, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44ahp_jwvAw (I'm a Megan Mills fan. Visit her site for some fun patterns.)

Also, search this site, Crochet Me, for 'turning chain' for other posts on the topic.
