Thread Twisting & First Felting

Categorized As:

Hey out there!

I am just starting some thread crochet, and having trouble with those wretched balls the thread comes in/on. The thread keeps twisting up and then I have to stop and let it unwind so that it doesn't turn into a knot. How can I avoid this? My husband bought me a great yarn ball winder for Valetine's Day, but I just don't know if it would work with thread since it is so thin and the center of the ball winder is rather large. Any suggestions?

On a totally different subject, what is a great felting project for a first-timer? I have three balls of Patons Classic Merino Wool in Dark Grey Mix, yet I have no idea what I'm-a-gonna make with it!

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Kelly K.

One trick I've read about, haven't tried, is to drop the thread spool over one of those paper towel spindles that stand on the counter. You can also buy a gadget that dangles from your wrist, holds the thread, and lets the thread reel off without twisting. There's another thread holder that sits on the table or floor and holds the thread on a horizontal spindle like a portable toilet paper holder. I think a spindle is your friend. I should try it too. So far the twisting thread is bothersome but not enough to find a solution.

I haven't tried felting either. I think my first project would either be a bag/purse or maybe coasters for my tea mugs.

More thoughts on twisty thread: I'm crocheting a doily with DMC's Baroque, a thread that comes in a pull skein, and it twists. I've been dangling the work to let it untwist. Then I got tired of that and just soldier on with twisty thread. Surprisingly, it hasn't got more and more twisted until it's impossible to use. It seems to reach a certain level but goes no farther, so it's very usable.

My point - rewinding your ball and working from the center will not solve the twisting problem.
