Question about pattern - Stash basket

Hi, I have a question about this pattern....I started the project, but my rounds never seem to line up properly. So I keep starting over, but that doesn't seem to help....

When doing the rounds, do I do a "chain 1" to start my round for the single crochet rounds? And then slip chain into that first chain 1 at the end of my round? And would that be the same for the double crochet rounds....would I do a chain 2?

If so, does that chain1 (or 2) count as my first sc (or dc)? And it says to mark the first stitch with a stitch marker, so do I put it in the chain 1?

What a great basket! From looking at the pattern, no chains are needed, just use your stitch marker to keep track of the rounds and make the first stitch on top of the first stitch of the previous round.
