Opinions? Plastic or Metal hooks? and a question.

Categorized As:

What are your opinions on hooks, plastic or metal?? I have been using a metal hook and have recently tried a plastic hook and hated it...Just wondering if I'm the only one who feels there is a major difference??

Also is there such a thing as a "circular" crochet hook??

Thanks :)

Metal hooks slide through the yarn better, but they are cold to hold at this time of year. Most, not all, plastic grabs the yarn, but is nicer to hold in the cool months. Generally I prefer metal but sometimes sit on it for a minute or two to warm it up. Best are nice hooks by Clover, I think, with metal tips, plastic handles. Whooo hooo!

I've also used wooden hooks, very nice to hold and very pretty, but the particular brand had a poorly shaped hook that split the yarn as you draw it through the loop. Now I know why they were on sale, probably a close out! I filed the pointy bit down and they are nice to work with now.

There are crochet hooks with a metal hook that ends in a nylon cable with a stopper on the end. They are used for afghan/tunisian crochet. Is that what you mean by a circular hook?

I don't know, actually let me explain, a friend of mine was saying how she wasn't a good crocheter but was good at knitting, and if she crocheted she would need to use a circular hook. I haven't ever seen anything like this or anyone that uses it so I thought I'd ask :)

I am finding I like my Aluminum hook better than the plastic one I bought for my daughters enjoyment (and son too apperantly. lol)

Ahh, tell your friend that crochet can be worked either in the round or back and forth with the same hook!

Tunisian(aka afghan stitch) is the only style of crochet that stays on the hook(for your knitting friend). The rest of the styles complete each stitch as you go, unlike knitting . I prefer aluminum Susan Bates hooks, altho wooden ones are nice if well-sanded.The cold handle thing is helped by the use of Comfort Grips by Kahoots Products. I get 'em at Joann's Fabrics, available online. Welcome to the addictive world of crochet!
