Newbie-greetings from the chilly Northwest!

Categorized As:

Hi everyone! Thought I'd come in and say hello and introduce myself a bit. I'm glad to have found a cool place like this!

I just moved to the US from Finland, so I'm not only new to this website but also this part of the world. I began crocheting only about 6 months ago, when I bought some hooks and yarn for myself as a birthday present (I had promised to teach some boys and girls crocheting in a class I teach, and then realized that I might have to learn it myself first--ouch!) Needless to say I was instantly hooked!

Man, that previous sentence is overflowing with pun-worthy material. Apologies.

I've been ecstatic to find all kinds of cool books on crocheting in the stores here, among them Crochet Me. How could I have resisted creating an account when the book implored me so... :)

I'm a huge nerd who is into books, languages, sci-fi, the occasional computer/console game, and movies. The journal I link to in my profile is actually my book journal--I swear, once I get a crochet journal set up when my projects get to be a bit more exciting, I will be sure to post about it.

So... Nice to meet you all! I hope I can contribute to the community soon with tips and patterns of my own. Your tips have already been a tremendous help to me, and I want to pay the community back at some point.

Welcome to the US and to the Northwest as well. I am so envious of people who can write perfect, idiomatic, American English when I'm so totally unilingual.

Thanks Pauline! Nice to meet you :) Have you attended any crochet-meet-ups around this area? I've been trying to look for some, just to meet new people, but so far I haven't found any...

If it makes you feel any better, it's really been a "sink or swim"-type of a thing, as not that many people around the world speak Finnish :D

Welcome from another northwesterner! I don't know what part you're in but chilly is right... the Seattle area got snow, there's still some on my front lawn! Enjoy the site!

Hi Jessica, and thanks for the welcome!
For some reason we missed the snow today (I actually live east of Lake Washington)--I just checked the Seattle Times and was surprised to see pictures of heavy snow fall!
After having to get to work by bike in blizzards for the past few winters, I do not mind the lack of snow, though ;)

I'm sure there are yarnie (crochet and knitting) groups, but the only one I know of for sure is at the South County Senior Center in Edmonds. I haven't checked it out yet. I'm a senior, but I suspect you are not.

I think some of the knitting shops host the groups. Kim Werker mentioned this great site, http://www.knitmap.com/map , in her blog once; I think that's where I found it. You could call one of your local LYS's to see if they host a group. Or we could form our own group if we're not too far from each other.

Welcome to the northwest with a hello from across Puget Sound! I'm in Port Townsend but I grew up amongst the other children and grandchildren of immigrants from Scandinavia (me and all the other Johnsons). Glad to have you in the neighborhood! What are you making with your hooks these days?

Glad to see other northwest members!!! I live in the heart of Scandinavia Seattle...aka Ballard : ) Although I'm not Scandinavian, I LOVE the area!! I crochet, and have not found any groups in the area that were not only older members (i am only 25) but of course I haven't looked very hard. I hope you enjoy the northwest as much as I do...even when we get snow in March and rain every other day of the year!!!!!

Pauline, thanks for the link! I'll be checking that out. I'm about an hour's bus drive away from Seattle (I'm still avoiding going there by car...), so we could definitely meet up some time for crocheting, especially if other local posters here are interested, too! (I'm 28, by the way).

Teresa, wow--I have been pretty amazed by the amount of Scandinavians around here, plus of course Finns (considering that Finland has about 5 million people, it's pretty amazing that they seem to be everywhere I turn, no matter what country I visit...). I'm right now working on the messenger bag from the Crochet Me-book: I had some odds and ends yarnwise, and decided to use them for the colored rectangles in the bag. We'll see... I got a bit frustrated with it at one point, so I whipped up a Jayne-hat the other evening (Jayne of Firefly-show fame). I think I'll keep it myself and make my hubby another one!

Leona, hi! Hehe, I'm amused by the Finnish flag on the side of Safeway in Ballard. It's like I never left the country... I actually come to Ballard once a week for work (in the evening, but I tend to come at least an hour earlier to avoid traffic), so if you ever feel like crocheting and chatting over a cup of coffee, let me know! :)

Well if you must hang out in Ballard ... ! There you cannot miss the Scandinavian heritage, though it was mostly Swedes and Norwegians. My mom claimed she was a "minority student" at Ballard High School in the 1940s because her background was neither of those (she's German, English, who-knows-what other northern European mix).

Lots of seafarers, fisherfolk, and lumberworkers made their way from your part of the world to the northwest in the late 19th and early 20th century. Ballard has changed SO enormously! But we always had good coffee...! and sweaters!
