New to forum & crochet! Looking for specific pattern type
Hi! My name is Candy. I'm 28, mom of two, and just began learning crochet recently while I hibernate through the hottest couple hours of the day, here near Hotlanta. The first thing I made was a beanie.. I followed an instructional video at Expert Village, and was able to successfully add extra rows to make the back of my hat longer and put earflaps on the sides. I also have a teddy bear in progress (ran out of yarn for the last leg, grrr; and made a doggy finger puppet. Now, I'm making some mittens, to match my earflap beanie. They have a buttoned flap to the top so I can let my fingers out without yankin my gloves off. I'm really enjoying crochet - but can't find exactly the patterns I'm very interested in making. I want to make some good hand puppets. I thought, by learning to make mittens, I could alter them myself to have "two thumb holes" on opposite sides for the arms and my other fingers would go into the puppets head. But, anyway.. I'd much rather try it first from an existing pattern. I don't want the head to be separate from the mitt part of the puppet.. Anybody know where I can find some cute free (or cheap) hand puppet patterns?

Hi Candy,
You're off to a great start. Have you tried Google? Like a search for "free (or cheap) hand puppet patterns?"

PS - Oops, better add the word 'crochet' to your search phrase or you'll get an endless list of fake-fur sewing patterns.
I actually have searched google and visited lots of crochet sites looking for a full sized hand puppet pattern. My search has been unsuccessful. Most of the sites I end up with have lots of finger puppets, or else they are SELLING crocheted hand puppets, rather than telling folks how to make them LOL. I found one really very excellent site with some patterns for wild animal hand puppets.. but, the 5 patterns were $18.00 and the finished product photos really looked like a project for someone with (a lot!!) more experience. Not saying I won't try it in the future, but it looked pretty daunting for a beginner. I even searched the rack at the local craft store for some magazine or book with some hand puppet patterns to no avail. Thanks, though.. I will keep looking. New stuff on this here internet every single day.. never know what you may find.

The great thing about crochet is that you can design on the fly quite easily.
For Example:
Use your finger puppet design as a jumping off place.
Make the whole thing larger aiming at making the bottom of the new puppet the same size as the opening on the mitten (or fingerless glove).
Flip the glove inside out over the puppet and using some of the same yarn from the mitten, slip stitch the two pieces together.
