kinds of yarn

I am trying to make an item from a pattern and I have difficulty finding alternative yarns because I do not understand the lingo -
Cotton worsted weight yarn - how does that fit into 4ply or chunky kind of yarn.
I am from South Africa and we do not get alot of your yarns here.
Please help.

I can relate trying to understand the different terms for yarns (I used to live in the UK and now live in the US). Cotton worsted weight would be a 4 ply type yarn (according to what it says on the side of my Sugar'n Cream yarn. It also uses the classification of "4 medium" to do with the weight of the yarn. Recommended hook size if 5mm.

Thank you so much - that's a real help! Funnily enough the pattern I had was with Sugar,n Cream yarn. What a coincedence...
