Just Saying Hello!

Categorized As:

Just saying hi really: "Hello!".

Was taught doily, filet & afghan style crochet as a child. Only ever really made blankets, tablecloths etc. I am now 31 yrs old btw.

Recently joined a local knit & crochet group (we meet in a pub weekly to socialise & work on our various projects). It's great fun...After years of crocheting with the radio, I'm learning how to crochet & talk & listen (still a bit hard to concentrate & chat at the same time!). I've graduated to hats & ponchos, & I'm even fantasizing about a snuggly cardigan, so I've definately progressed. I'm a left handed crocheter, & I must admit I am wimpishly scared about shaping for some reason, which is why I haven't actually started any garments as of yet.

My other passion is jewellery making & I'm experimenting at the moment with bead crochet. I'm also making up sets of cotton snowflakes for Christmas decorations. I've heard of several 'stiffening' methods (sugar water, Mod Podge, hairspray, spray starch) but would be interested to hear which you would recommend... I don't want the application to obscure my pattern, but I would like the motifs to be firm enough to hang & not curl. All ideas welcome!

Oh well, thats me & my neuroses introduced to you. It would be great to get to know some of you & I look forward to my future Crochet Me travels.

Hi Artful Adorner! It's nice to meet you. I, too, learned crochet as a child, but didn't do it for years and picked it back up about 14 years ago. Right now, I'm making alot of mesh market bags. I like to make hotpads with fun designs, like in the Happy Hooker book. I have dreams about a great crocheted cardigan. I've made some pullovers that I love, but a cardi would be so wonderful. I recently learned to knit, and go back and forth between the two. I'll do anything to be with my yarn! ha ha
I'm sure we'll have a great time here at CrochetMe.
Hugs!

Thanks ericsgirl. The Happy Hooker book is great fun. Mesh market bags are very popular & so handy to stow away when not in use.Looking forward to keeping upto date with each other, going to add you as a bud if that's ok?

Cheers!

Greetings,
Seems like most of us learn at an early age in life. I did as well. My grandmother taught me. And like the rest of us, I put it down and got married and raised our daughter. Then about 10yrs ago, I picked it back and haven't stopped since. I have a yahoo group. I'm located in Oklahoma. Married to the same wonderful man for almost 27yrs now.
I have a few WIP's. I've started in on my christmas gifts already. Just finished my second little girls granny square purse. So many things I would like to do, but not enough time to do them.. lol.
Hope to chat with you all sometime.

Seems like I'm joining the great crochet revolution too!! Taught basic chain by my great Auntie when I was tiny, now 40+, then ditched it for knitting, shock horror. 20yrs down the line I was wearing a 'bought' crochet jumper, which I loved; caught it against the door and watched as in cartoon style, it unravelled 3 rows or so. Bit cross by now lol so pitched it into the bin in a fit of pique, thought about it, went out and bought some 4ply cotton in a contrasting colour. Washed retrieved jumper and once dried, added my own individual trims.
Having been convalescing following back surgery, since june, and prior to that off work since last Dec, I have barely put down a hook. It's miles better for my back than knitting too!! Taught myself to read patterns properly and plunged into making all manner of garments. Great pressies for Christmas and net market bags have been a big hit.
I've christened crochet 'stealth knitting' as it can be done without the tell-tale needle clicking lol!
Good to join you, chat sometime soon.

I like Stiffen Stuff to make stars and doileys stiff, but not too stiff. It dries clear too.

Great to meet you all & hear your crochet backgrounds. LOL, I really like the 'stealth knitting' idea. I have irritating back problems (acute sciatica on & off) & this is the reason I recently re-ignited my passion for crochet. Thank goodness for my grannies all those years back, or else I would have gone stir crazy whilst off sick. It's great that you can crochet when flat on your back, or even standing up!

Look forward with chatting with you all in the future. What have people got lined up for crochet Christmas/Thanksgiving gifts this year?

Hi A.A.,

Umm, gift season. Shopping bags may be a good idea. I'd thought of dishrags, cute doiley-style dish rags, but I think a shopping bag might be more appreciated. Yeah. Now to find some cool colors.
