Joining Squares
Hi Everyone,
Looking for fun, interesting, and or different ways of joining together afghan squares...
My neighbor is working a very nice afghan with a relief flower in the center and dreads sewing the 48 squares together. :) Anyway, she could use something that adds a bit more of the color which is along the square's edges while joining these squares.
Since the squares are so nice, I was looking for a prettier and more exciting way that these squares could be put together. (... which would also help make the task more interesting or help motivate one to finish up the project).
So far, I found a flat braid method online and I linked to in the list below.
Joining Squares
So far, a few online finds:
- Flat Braid Square Joining Method (Priscilla Hewitt) photograph examples included.
- Ways to Join Crocheted Squares or Motifs (Sandi Marshall, about.com photos included.
- Little Purl of the Orient: Joining Squares Together photos included.
I was wondering if anyone else in the group can offer up some great ideas or techniques for joining squares which would make it more fun. Maybe we could put together a resource list for Joining Squares? Illustrations or pictures would be wonderful also.
thanks,
holly

Generally I join motifs as I go. These are thread motifs, they are often joined at the points, and it would be misery to try to link them up later.
For woolly squares, here's something different from Annie's Attic called the Tunisian Join, http://www.anniesattic.com/crochet/content.html?month=8&type_id=A&year=2...
I'd describe it as a crochet join but using the basic Tunisian Simple Stitch. It looks very smooth from the front with a distinct ridge on the back. No, I haven't tried it but I might next time I join woolly squares.

Hi Holly,
You might want to check out this page:

About a quarter down the page is a post called "Dudessembly", which is basically an alternate afghan joining technique.
Keep moving about halfway down the page to the Monet Afghan, and you'll find another interesting joining technique.
It seems like these might both be intended for larger squares, but it's worth a look. I haven't tried it yet, but at first glance, it looks kinda easy and fun. Also, it's definitely not your standard whip-stitching together:)

WOW
How have I missed this web site... ?
What a very nice web site and patterns/projects, and believe me, I have been looking at needlework sites for several years, and all the time. :)
Anyway, thanks for those joining mentions:
Dudessmbly, and the Monet join look really nice and fun.
When I can get the pic of the afghan square off my cell, I will post it here. [I may just go back to her house and take my digital camera.]
Thanks again.
Your welcome!
Yes, that site has a lot of good stuff on it. As soon as I read your post I remembered the joining techniques I saw there. I'll be interested in seeing how it works out :)
