joining the rounds

Hello,

I am new to this forum and also new to crocheting. I am currently on a project rying to crochet Hello Kitty. I have problems with joining the rounds.I follows the pattern(a japanese pattern)but when it come to joining the round and make a chain for the new row I ended up having one more stitch from the slip stitch I used for joining. I studied some of the patterns for the rounds and for the round with 6 SC into the ring I ended up with 7 stitches when I join the round.Can someone help me with this.

not sure if this helps at all... maybe chain one and then sc in the same stitch, then you'd do five more sc and slip stitch in the top of the first sc.
