If You Use Magic Adjustable Ring...
How does the magic ring work with a pattern? I'm planning to try making amigurumi.
For example...
R1 Ch2, 8sc in 2nd chain from hook
R2 2sc in each sc around (16sc)
R3 *2sc in 1st sc, 1sc in next, repeat from * around
Do I assume that the ring is round 1 and 2 and start with 3?

You will crochet the first round of your stitches, right through the center of the ring. The magic circle is replacing the chain but it has the same purpose as the chain.

Well, it might not matter. I can't seem to teach myself how to do this on my own. I've tried just following the instructions on the magic ring page and I can't even produce what she did there. *sigh*
Thanks just the same, tjw1963.
I have several video's showing how to do this technique. Will a video help? I am including a video tutorial for a stripe cap that uses the magic circle. Amigurumi will be done the same way.

Thank you. I will give those a try. Here's hoping I can figure it out.
I told my husband today that maybe I need a new skein of yarn to learn. I'm using yellow and I don't like yellow. Not even sure why I have any yellow yarn in the first place. LOL!
Your video tutorials are great. There's one thing I'm unclear on when doing the round. After I do the dcs, do I do anything to "close" the round before I chain 3 and start the next round?
mad for crochet!
It depends on the pattern. If you are working in a spiral, just make your first stitch of the second round in the first stitch of the magic ring. If you are turning your work, slip stitch into the first stitch of the magic ring to close the circle, ch 3 and then turn.
I tried the "magic ring"
It was cool for like - 5 minutes...
Do it old school & follow the pattern you gave:
R1 Ch2,
make slipknot & chain 2 (3 little hearts u will see)
8sc in 2nd chain from hook
in the middle chain (#2) : sc 8 into that space......It will make a circle - i promise
R2 2sc in each sc around (16sc)
put 2 sc into each of the 8 spaces to increase to 16
R3 *2sc in 1st sc, 1sc in next, repeat from * around
put 2 sc into the first space put 1 sc in the next and then 2 and then 1 and so on
Do I assume that the ring is round 1 and 2 and start with 3?
The magic ring is still round 1
the magic circle would be 8 to start, forget the chain &
the old skool starts with chains.
I have tried both but always get perfect results when not using the magic ring
I have a tutorial on my site about the magic ring. I prefer to use it instead of the ch 2, work in 2nd chain from hook method.
Maybe it will help.. I have been sent several emails telling me it has helped others..

In the end either method will work - you need to do what is most comfortable for you :)
