I need help undertanding comfy & cozy mitten pattern!!!
I'm using the pattern from the book Complete Crochet.
the part I am not understanding is:
Round 6(ws): ss between hdc at end and 2 ch at beg of last round,2 ch,*skip next st, 1 hdc between st just skipped and next st, rep from * to end, ww to top of 2 ch at reg of round, turn.
So after the * I am reading it as skip one, then do a hdc in the next st, then skip one. Right??? but when I do that it decreases the # of st's in half! I believe this to be the wrist opening of the mitten. I must not understand what the part after the * really implies because when I try it the opening gets smaller and smaller.
Am I missing what it means to hdc "between" st's skipped?
so stuck, and cold with out my mittens.
please help -Torre

I'm guessing that "skip next st, 1 hdc between st just skipped and next st" means to crochet into the space between the stitches, not the usual crochet into the top of the stitches. If you crochet into the space between the stitches, you'll end up with only one less stitch in a row. Here's a site with pictures of this method in double crochet - http://belladia.typepad.com/bella_dia/2006/11/vintage_vertica.html - hit the Page Down button 5 times.
thank you so much, I'm going to check it out right now!!!
