Hi! My name is Liz. I'm new to crochet. I'm trying to learn the basic single seed stitch--using single crochet. I keep chaining more rows than what I started out with and I don't know which bar under my Ch1-sp to stick my hook under. Please help.
You must mean the (sc, ch1) across the row, then (sc in the space below, ch1) across the second row with a bit of fiddling at the beginning and end of the row to keep the stitch count right.
If so, reach your hook under all three threads of the ch1. Usually you stitch into spaces the easiest way, into the largest space that's there. Think of all the women making crochet lace for a living back when. They wanted to complete their projects as quickly as possible, and aiming for the largest space goes faster. Nowadays, we get impatient, too, so the rule still holds for wool or thread.
You could work into the front or back of the ch1 to get a different effect, and it would be pretty, but slower. If the instructions don't say, they assume you will work into the large space. Working into the ch1 isn't wrong; it's just not the norm.
It is easy to get your stitch count wrong so be very careful to follow the instructions about the beginning and end of the row. The first and last stitches are probably where you are getting off.
