What kind of clothing do you wear? If you can wear cotton clothes, for instance, you should be able to crochet with 100% cotton yarn or thread. Are you sure you don't have a metal allergy (hooks)?
I've even read, on another forum, of allergies to acrylic yarn! The solution there was to wash the skein - put it in a nylon sock first to prevent tangling in the washing machine.
