help with a giant crochet mouse!

Categorized As:

Hello!

I was wondering if all you experienced crocheters could help me with something.

It is probably a realy stupid question, but here goes...

I want to make a giant crochet mouse for my Dad (long, long story...) and have some patterns for small ones.

What I want to know is, is there some sort of formula I can apply to an exsisting pattern to make it bigger.

I don't know if any of this makes any sense to you guys or if there's a laughably simple answer to this which I really should have been able to figure out... but I'm not confident enough to make my own pattern up and I'm running out of time because this is for Christmas.

I've got a shed load of other things to knit and crochet for presents too so I don't want to spend the next month and a half frogging a giant mouse!

Any help or advise would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

How giant?

Have you ever seen a plush mouse in a toy shop that is like what you want to make? Maybe you could sneak a measuring tape in and take some measurements of it.

I think you are right about being wary of blowing up a pattern, like multiplying everything by 10. I suspect it doesn't translate that easily.

I wonder if you could find a pattern for a giant cloth mouse in a fabric store and use the measurements from the pattern?

Out of ideas...

ooh, they are quite good ideas!

That's definatley somethig I could consider doing, taking measurements off a cloth one if I see one the same sort of size.

I guess I really want some idea of how to increase an existing pattern I already have. I want the finished mouse to be about 6" in circumference and perhaps 8" long. It's a giant egg shape really (the pointier bit being the nose...)!

Anyone got any ideas where I might find a giant egg shape pattern?

Thanks for your input and the ideas, much appreciated!

hi
i am new here this is my first post
i am not good with patterns but
your father must have good sense of humour
if you want the mouse to sit up
i woud make 2 circles and stuff and crochet them together
then i would make the head any shape you want
stuff and crochet to body and use different color for
joining head to the body
same for legs and tail
you can use buttons or beads for eyes
novelty yarn for wiskers and mouth
this way i build my animals
i would even use fuzzy yarn for the inside of the ears
and maybe some fuzzy yarn for the end of the tail
and you could do the same with paws
this way you can pick the size you want and the shape you want
i single crochet for the whole thing
when you have the whole mouse put together
you can do all the embellishments that you want
because i am very visual this works for me
it took me long time to figure out that you can crochet ontop of a finished animal
a little bit freeform
i get carried away when i make animals so i end up with
funny funky looking pets

Thanks Sylvia!

For some reason I hadn't considered making it in different sections. I think that's because I made a little one, all in one go in the round, a while back.

I am definitley going to consider making it this way.

My dad does have a top sense of humour...maybe after I've finished making the mouse and have surprised him at Christmas I'll reveal the full, long, and quite hilarious story behind the mouse!

I will post pictures as well once I've made it!

Thanks again!
