Help with Babydoll dress from Crochet Me

Categorized As:

Hi everyone

I'm making the lovely lacy Babydoll dress from the Crochet Me book.

I've finished the bodice part, and started on the skirt. Have done about 3 rows.

Its coming out really small- I can't even try the dress on any more.

I'm going to start the skirt again, but has anyone worked this pattern and has any advice? I'm sure somehow the first row is coming out too small, but I can't see how. My gauge was ok when I tested it.

Thanks
Naomi

Hi. I haven't tried that pattern yet. Just bought the book the other day. I don't know if this suggestion is a good one for that particular pattern but anytime I run into the problem you're having, I use a hook one size up and it works for me. I always change hook sizes on patterns when they aren't coming out the way I would like.

Now that I've bumped your question up, perhaps you'll get an answer that is better :).
Good luck!!!

I find gauge is a slippery, non-constant thing. Mine changes as soon as I finish the gauge swatch. Check the gauge on your bodice to see if you have the same problem.

i started swatching for the babydoll last night too with brown sheep cotton fleece...but i can't seem to get 20 sc-blo for 4"...i get 16 sc-blo with a G hook, and 18 sc-blo with a E hook...is this normal?...what hook did you use?...did you finish your babydoll?

I am at the same spot as Naomi. I am making this dress for my daughter. This is my 3rd attempt at the skirt part. The bodice fits - but when I start the skirt row according to the directions, it is very small. The last time I ended up with 12 shells in a row. Switched to the larger size needle and added another shell and it was still too small. HELP!!

Naomi, did you ever figure this out?

I looked at the close-up photo on p.10, and the set up round stitches look v-e-r-y stretched. They almost don't look like single crochet*. So use a larger hook? Do sc, ch 1 around? Make the final loop on each stitch extra long?

Then the eyelet round says to *double crochet, chain 1, skip a stitch, repeat from * around. Look at the photo - every stitch in the set up round has a double crochet worked into it, no skips.

So my guess is to somehow stretch the set up round stitches, stretch them a lot or else add ch 1's, and then don't skip any stitches in the eyelet round. It's all a guess since I didn't try a swatch. I didn't look any further at the following rows.

Are there any hints on Ravelry or is there an errata site for this book, maybe at Interweave Press, Kim Werker's blog, or the designer's blog?

* They look more like slip stitch, chain 1.

Have any of you finished this dress? I really want to make it but want to know how you figured it out or if it turned out fine in the end. Please let me know.
