I need some help. I have started a project and am stuck. Heres what the instructions say. ch5, sk 4 ch & 1 sc. I thought ch and sc where the same thing, so I am confused as to what to count. Can someone help me.
From what you say I would assume the previous row has chains and single crochet stitches? I think I would need a bit more of the instructions to be sure.
ch=chain
sc=single crochet
They are not the same (I'm assuming your using an English pattern not British?)

Hi Rhonda,
In the US, chains and single crochets are different. Crochet Pattern Central has a directory of instructions, mostly with US terminology.
Here's one of their links with drawings showing the stitches, http://www.craftown.com/crolesson.htm
Here's a page listing US vs. UK terms plus the symbols for each stitch, http://www.mypicot.com/symter01.html.

Pauline
A chain is the link-type stitch you start out with. A sc is a bit thicker...did you get the help you needed?
