first private message - say what?

Categorized As:

Hi all,

I just joined the site. Looks like just what I need to get some new inspiration for crochet!

So when I logged on for the first time, it says I have one new private message (expecting a Welcome or something like that), and the message is:

3

That's right, the number 3.

So, first of all, what's up with that?

Second, how do you delete a private message when you're finished contemplating its meaning?

This site has had a bug or two crawling around in the last couple of days. I got a '3' when I looked at one of the pages, forget which one. I think your '3' came from the same place.

Delete a message? Don't know how.

Most of the time, this is a well-behaved and delightful site, and I'm glad you found it. Welcome.

Oh, weird! Thanks for reporting this; I'll look into it. It is a bug, for sure, and it might well be related to the database and server issues we've had in the last few days (thanks, Pauline!).

As for how to delete a pm, scroll to the bottom of the message—you should see a link for "delete this message". Please let me know if that's not showing up.

OK, I figured it out. In my account profile, I had clicked off allowing private messages. (At first, I thought it was going to be emails but now I see how it works, and I don't mind having it on.) So apparently when you don't allow private messages, but there is one anyway, you get a 3 showing up. Maybe that will help you troubleshoot your database/server problems. Is it an error code? Page not found, something like that? Anyway, when I clicked allow private messages then I could see the Welcome message, and I was also able to delete it.

Awesome; thank you for this info! It will certainly help me figure out what the bug is. I'm glad you got it all fixed. :)
