www.knitting-warehouse.com - This is my favorite yarn store. I have compared yarn prices with this store again and again, and I have found that Knitting Warehouse always prices their yarn a couple dollars or cents cheaper. Same amount of yardage/ounces per skein, too. They have a wide selection of popular yarn brands such as: Lion Brand, Caron, Bernat, Red Heart, TLC, Moda Dea, South West Trading Company, etc. Their shipping is always $5.99, no matter how much you purchase.
www.joann.com - This is a good place to buy your yarn IF you keep an eye out for sales. I usually wind up buying my yarn from Joann because I like to take advantage of their free shipping offers (Usually for orders of $35 or more). I also find it convenient because they sell so many other craft supplies, so it is a one stop and buy place for me. I am trying to slowly draw away from shopping at Joann because I want to purchase more yarn at independent knitting shops or online stores. I don't want these unique shops to disappear!
www.herrschners.com - You would love browsing through their yarn collection. They really expanded their yarn choices to include almost as many brands as www.yarnmarket.com. Their prices are usually higher than my favorite store (knitting-warehouse.com) but I still like to shop here because a lot of the yarn they carry I can't find anywhere else.
www.ebay.com - I just bought some yarn off of ebay for the first time. Just like PAULINE3 said above, ebay can be intimidating to use. That is why I skipped all the bidding and auctions and went straight to the EBAY STORES. There is where I found a store called Darlene's Crafts and Collectibles. She sells many of her skeins of yarn by using the BUY IT NOW option, where there is no bidding involved. All you have to do is select the yarn you want and make the transaction on the spot.
You may be able to get a better deal if you do an auction but I like the "instant purchase" quality of BUY IT NOW's.
These are all the places I use to buy yarn and I have found all of them to be highly reliable and easy to use. Have fun shopping!
Elann.com, Knitpicks.com, Lionbrand.com, and some I don't remember at the moment.
I've never tried eBay, a little afraid of it, but others tell of great buys there.
Thanks! I'll check those out. What about Etsy? I was browsing over there yesterday and there is a lot of really gorgeous yarn!
mad for crochet! Numei has some great prices and interesting yarns.
Here are a few stores to check out:
