Doris Chan's 4-S Vest

Categorized As:

This is my completed version of Doris Chan's 4-S Vest.

I initially stuck rigidly to the pattern and then tried it on when the body was done, but before the edging. It was a fair fit, but I decided that the yoke/shoulder part was too long which made the armholes too low which made the scoop shaping too low as well (I am clearly shorter than I realised, lol!). I frogged it back to the yoke and missed the last row before joining and joined with three sc foundations instead of the directed five which fitted me much better. The other change was to only again only do three sc foundations at the waistcoat shaping. I finished it off and wore it to our work Christmas lunch and got lots of compliments. However, I felt it was slightly too short to be comfortable (it was just my personal feelings because it didn't look too short) and I wasn't entirely happy with how I'd done the edging.

So third time was the charm! I decided that I wanted a snugger fit on the body so I frogged it back to just before the waistcoat shaping. I added the directed five extra sc foundations but decreased by two stitches under each armhole. I then carried on with the pattern rows until I was happy with the length and finished off, including the edging. I'm so pleased with it! The "buttons" are actually four red beads that a friend in California found and they go perfectly. I've only worn it a handful of times because it's been quite cold and I've needed sweaters/cardigans with arms, but it's going to be a great spring cover up and if we have a summer like last year's, it's going to get a lot of use!

4-S Vest finished!

It looks lovely, and I'd like to see it on you. You were very clever, and patient, to work so on getting the fit right.

Somehow, this should be your Cinnabar sweater, LOL.

Lol!! It was a learning curve, but a good learning curve. It's made me more confident of adapting patterns to my taste. I'm working on getting an "in action" photo... =)

OMG, this is absolutely gorgeous! I like this so much better in a solid color than in stripes. Please tell me what yarn you used. Are you finding Doris' patterns easier each time?

Thank you so much! This probably isn't going to help, but it's a basic, no-name, no-frills, 100% acrylic DK (worsted) yarn. And yes, definitely. I've done an Eve's Rib Tunic that I need to take photos of where I modified pretty much everything - gauge, stitch pattern, style - without any tears or tantrums. The patterns seem to have the same basic construction so once you've got the hang of the stitch pattern, they crochet up pretty quickly because you know what you should be aiming for. My top tip for a Doris pattern is to never let your stitch markers out of your sight!

Miggins, this is beautiful! It is so wonderful to see what you are doing with these patterns. You seem to be having the same reaction I do; it is SO worthwhile taking the time to really figure out what's going on with this patterns, because so much thought goes in to them. When I did this last fall I could really feel my skills expanding! I only hope I can get back to crocheting before I forget how!

Well I am new here
You did a wonderful job on the Vest and also your sweater from the Everyday Crochet book.. I have that book and did the Galena top for my daughter when I can get around this site better I will share the pic.. My next project from that book will be the mei mei little top featured on the front cover.. Love the way Doris Chan does those button clasps .. I really do the the Vest you did in a solid color rather then the multi colors in the book.. Her patterns are a tad on the tricky side but they sure turn out nice.
