crocheting a knit chart pattern, please help.

Categorized As:

so i LOVE this pattern from knitty.

problem is... im not all that great of a knitter.

and i want to make an afghan not a scarf (so no working in the round).

can anyone help me with ideas of how to do this?
i tried just using single crochet and reading the pattern from left to right, and then right to left as i went through the rows, but the digits came out looking weird. the single crochets didn't line up perfectly. this might be because i crochet VERY tight (i always have to use at least 1 hook size up from whats recommended for a pattern).

any suggestions? comments? ideas of what to encode on it in binary?

The sc's won't line up perfectly. That's just the way it is, as far as I know. Like a diagonal of pixels, if you make the lines fatter, and the numbers taller, the jogs will be less noticeable. If you work in the round, they'll be smoother, but slanting to the right, or maybe it's the left, but definitely slanting. Google "tapestry crochet" or "fair isle crochet" for more.

Have you tried Tunisian/Afghan stitch? The stitches line up nicely. You'll need a special hook.

What should you say? How about 'exquisite', 'certitude dude', 'congrats' (for deciphering it), 'cipher', your screen name or 'terse' if you enlarge the 1's and 0's?

i'll mess around with it. i'm also left handed. i think that contributes to the problem.

A guy, a hook, and some yarn.
