I clicked preview before sending this on, what I wrote was in Categorize and also with my intials it showed that I put this in on 31 December 1969 8 PM, It is 11 September 2008 8:35 am, I had a birthday on Mon. the 8 of this year, so I know it's not 1969--ha ha.
Hi I'm new to the board, so I hope I am doing everything right. I am a senior and have been crocheting with plastic grocery bags off and on for a year. I started a Senior crochet group in Jan. One of the girls suggested the name "The Happy Hookers" for our group. We are using yarn and the plastic bags. Not together. So I was wondering if anyone out there is crocheting with plastic..

Hi!

Not me; I have a shortage of plastic bags since I switched to reusable grocery bags. That was an unexpected consequence. I have to horde those I get so I can continue to line my wastebaskets, LOL.

I did see that Crochet Pattern Central recently added an entry on how to prepare the bags.

I crochet with plastic bags. There is a website/blog dedicated to crocheting with recycled materials...it's really neat. There are several purse/bag patterns, including a clothespin bag that is just cute.
In addition to plastic bags, there are also patterns for crocheting with VCR and cassette tape ribbons!

I really like this idea. As soon as I finish the 12,000 or so hats I have promised to make this year, I am going to move on to bags.

I saw the clothespin bag. It's really neat looking. Thanks for the tip.

I love how she trimmed it with ribbon...seeing that gave me ideas.
I just trimmed a bag with a neat flower. I used the Knifty Knitter flower loom to make one using beautiful blue plastic bag with a yellow curling ribbon (used on gifts and as balloon strings) center. I was so amazed with the fantastic results! Now I just have to find places that have pretty colored plastic bags so I can make more!
I will post pics as soon as I can get my computer to quit fighting with my camera.

I have made a few of these bags from bags, and auctioned them at a science teachers convention. They are very popular. I, too, have made the switch to cloth bags (made from old t-shirts), so I have to beg for bags from my students. Dollar General is such a nice, bright yellow!

A great way to get lots of bags is to check with your local stores. Many of them provide bins for recycling bags. Just ask if you can have them. Most don't mind, since they usually pay to have them removed. Then you can take them home, keep what you need, and return the rest to the recycle bin at the store.
