Lily Chin's book, "Couture Crochet", has several chapters of instructions for creating your own patterns. She often starts with a sewing pattern.
I don't have a copy of Doris Chan's book, but I believe she has lots of suggestions for customizing patterns. She also has an article about fitting in the current, Winter 2007, "Interweave Crochet".
I think all methods lead to some frogging, but surely it would be less than with pure trial and error. I've only made a dog sweater, a tiny dog sweater, without a pattern, so I wish you luck.
You'll share pictures of what you've done, of course, :-)
I just thought of another potential source - this site. It has lots of articles from it's earlier incarnation and some may cover design. Go to Home and click on the word 'articles'. It's part of the text, not a menu item.

Thanks for the ideas! I sew and make patterns professionally, but I've never tried to translate one into crochet! This might be getting over-ambitious, but I will be sure to share the results - even if only for a laugh.

Looking forward to it!
