Cochi and Neal

Categorized As:

Here are the results of my play date with my little bug friends Cochi and Neal.(I dyed some yarn with cochineal bugs) Oh boy what fun we had! I tied them up in a little nylon sack, boiled them in some distilled water and then sent the alum premordanted yarns in after them! I used a contraption I made with string to hold some of the yarn out of the bath to get different shades of color. I am letting the yarn dry and cure for a few days before I rinse. I read this tip on the wild colors website. I may have to play with ammonia in the rinse to see what happens, but I probably shouldn’t mess around any more with these skeins. (heh heh heh we’ll see if I can resist!!) The photo shows the superwash merino/ alpaca/nylon in the original bath, and the wool/ silk in the 2nd exhaust then the 1st exhaust. Lovin’ the pinks!!!

Cochineal bugs are cockroaches, arn't they! Or is this a nick-name for something else?

mad for crochet!
They are not cockroaches, they are scale insects that live on prickly pear cactus plants.
