Changing yarn color

I am working on a pattern that calls for changing between 2 yarn colors several times. I am wondering what to do with the previous yarn once I change colors. Do I leave it attached to the skein or do I cut the yarn and tie it off somehow?

You could carry the unused yarn along the back by working over it with the new color, as long as the unused color doesn't show through on the front of your work.
